The pre op nurse called today and after hearing I was concerned about GA, she told me I should "discuss" this with the dentist (who I only met twice for ten minutes!) and then proceeded to describe how he would be intubated for the whole hour etc.

I didn't know about that part and I am freaking out. He does have one infected tooth and he had fused teeth in front that partially fell out. He needs a crown or two as well.

I really want to just cancel and wait, but the dentist won't hear of it, and we felt like incompetant, almost abusive parents just talking with the dentist! We have had such a hard time brushing with him. And then at the pre op physical he freaked out the whole time with the ped, wouldn't let her even touch him without me restraining him, kept trying to leave, screamed the whole time.

I can't imagine how I am going to get through this, and I am just so scared about the GA.

Help!

It will be fine. DD just went thorugh 1.5 hours under GA, with the tube in her throat and she came through without much discomfort. There was a little blood from them not being able to get the tube into her nose at first. And her teeth hurt her from the dental work, but the actual GA didn't seem to phase her that much (she was clingy for about a week after, but we discovered that she had gingivitis set in and we think that caused a lot of it). I just wrote about our experience here lately. I bumped it up for you. It is the one about Lydia's new teeth.

I suggest you call the dentist's office back and get the number for the anesthesiologist at the hospital you are going to. Then call them and actually talk to the Dr. That helped relieve my fears the most. A good doctor will talk to you....

They will most likely give him a sedative before they take him back to do the GA. You will be wound up more than him. Anyway, if you want, read my thread, and if you want to talk, pm me. I will check back in a few times a day in case you want to talk.

Get some Rescue Remedy, too, by the way. And breathe.....It will be fine. Hugs! I know it is a hard thing to do.

Dominic is two and a half, but he sounds way less mature than your Lydia. He barely speaks and he it very very shy. I think the ped thought he was autistic at his pre op exam.

Thanks for the reassurance though. I am going to take your advice and talk to the dentist at the very least. He's not the friendliest guy I've ever met, but I hear he's the best in the area.
