bystanders tackled him before he could do anything: he told the police he was going to throw her in front of the train!

I was reading this in the paper today. The Mom said that bystanders tackled the kidnapper, comforted her other 5-year old child, and even picked up her purse that she dropped when she ran after the guy. Makes me glad to live in Portland.

Horrible story. I'm so glad people stepped in and saved that little girl.
Makes me glad to live near Portland. Thank goddess the crowd didn't succumb to Genovese syndrome.
: Throw her in front of the train????

That story scared the crap out of me. I take my girls on the MAX quite a bit. I know it was a fluke, but it really hit home.
Holy shite, batman. My heart was racing reading that. I'm so glad it ended well, and quickly. That poor little girl, she must have been petrified! And the Mom... I think I would have literally peed myself.

Clearly a very, very disturbed man. In a way, I feel sorry for him, but not sorry in a way that means I think he should be free. That man needs some serious psychological help

thank goodness for those good people who stepped in to help. makes me want to keep dd in my house forever. that is so scary.
That is just craziness. I wonder WHY to things like that. Ok, so you wanted to throw the baby infront of the train WHY??
What a sad, twisted story. I hope that guy gets the help he needs, and I'm glad that all those bystanders stepped in to lend a helping hand. Thank goodness that little girl wasn't hurt.
I am so incredibly thankful that this story had a good ending.
This story reminds me of the baby that got stabbed in her stroller near me, during last summer I think. I'm glad the child is ok. What a horrible thing to happen!
DH was trying to talk me into going to OMSI on the MAX last time we went. Being from a town that does not have mass transit of any sort, I said no I would rather not take the baby on the MAX. Last time I went with the 7 year old some nasty guy sat next to us and he reeked, and keep talking to DD. He really made me nervous. Anyway, it will me a long time before I take my kids on the MAX again.

I am so glad everyone step in to get that baby back. The really sad thing is, someone tried to kidnap another two year out out of her backyard the day after this happened. A 7 year old kicked and screamed until that attacker left without that baby. People are just crazy!

Apparently that didn't happen.

I'm not afraid of the MAX. I probably never will be--I've been riding it since it came to the westside. That story did freak me out, but only because I could see myself being that mother. It was a rare occurrence. Downtown PDX is still pretty safe--especially in broad daylight.

I don't like to live my life in fear. I'm reading "Protecting the Gift" right now and it's really helping me determine which of my fears are irrational and which are legitimate.
I thought that story sounded a little fishy. Especially when the mother keep saying, "If it wasn't for the other girl I don't know what would have happened to my baby." and I was thinking, how about not letting your 2 year old play outside by herself dummy. I dont think those girls would make up the story on their own though, weird.

As far as the MAX goes, as I said, I have never lived with mass transit before and my only experience freaked me out a bit.
I have taken my 2 year old and 6 year old on the MAX. Life Mamadawg, it is freaky, but PDX is a safe and friendly town.
And sometimes the stinky people are really charming and funny.

look MD, I know I stink, but is this really the place to bring it UP?
Gosh that would have been terrifying. A good reason to sling or make sure kids are buckled in tight!
While it is a terrible thing that he did, I am glad to know that there really are people wjho will help! Wasnt it yesterday ort day before that there was a thread about a hidden camera and they were faking a child kidnapping and nobody would help?? And the name they mentionned with this incident was a 14 year old boy!!! Good going
Amazing isnt it???
