J has a viral infection and a pretty good ear infection in one ear, they gave us tylanol with codiene for him. Kinda heebie jeebied by that..... need advice. He is realllllly misearble. They also gave him numbing drops, thinking try that first before the heavy duty stuff. New to the ear infection stuff, I nor E have ever had them...

I'm dealing with ds's first ear infection also - it's tough, isn't it?!
I had tried to read what I could online and I *thought* I read that ibuprophen (motrin) was better for an earache.... but then maybe age was a consideration.... It is hard to see them so uncomfortable though, but I hate even giving ds motrin (he's 4.5). But it really works. I would try the numbing drops first - if J is comfortable then you don't have to worry about anything else.

Also to try is some garlic oil - either warm some olive oil w/crushed garlic cloves in it (strained, of course!) or use a garlic oil capsule and then use a bit of cotton ball to "seal" it in the ear. Also a hot water bottle or heating pad is supposed to help. I say all this, but we've still been dealing with this for over 4 days now!

It's interesting - they didn't try to push antibiotics then?

I would try the drops and a warm compress first, or regular OTC pain reliever. My dd was given Tylenol with codeine when she broke her arm and it really gave her terrible mood swings. Of course it might be different for your kiddo, but if it were me I'd try other measures first.

Thanks mama's, they gave him ABX and I will use them since last month he had one and it took two rounds of different ABX to clear it up and he had never been on them before.
I am going to try motrin and the drops tonight, if it is that bad again tonight after that after 2 then I might try the heavy stuff
