Here we go, same old story, different story teller. Let's start with the exciting news... We got a new puppy!
: I'd like to introduce everyone to George the Wheaten. He is 8wks old and such a little sweetie. Very good puppy.

Now moving on to the not so fun stuff.. We've got puppy diarrhea. Vet checked, everything is great, no worms. SO, we did change his food to Cal Natural from the nasty purina puppy chow crap the breeder was feeding (WHY?!!?). So at first I stopped the food and gave him some pumpkin puree. Fixed the problem completely. Tried going back to kibble with of course no luck. What's next? Do the whole chicken and rice deal??

I've heard to just keep trying to feed the kibble since that's what we plan on feeding. However, if all its going to do is produce diarrhea, we'll need to figure out something else. As you other Wheaten owners know, that hair needs cleaned everytime there's a loose stool and his bottom is starting to get sensitive.

SO, if I start doing a very bland raw diet with very few ingredients, what should I be feeding? Just the chicken and rice? Should I go ahead and add a little yogurt? Will this be enough to support a growing pup?

TIA!! I know you all probably get really sick of these questions!

Okay, back to square one. Pumpkin, some yogurt mixed in for a day. Then go to some cooked chicken for a day, still giving the pumpkin and yogurt, too. There is a product called benebac that I love but I don't know if you can get it at petco or anything. I order it for new puppies and it really helps with occaisional diarrhea.

It could be that he can't handle the Cal Nat. It is pretty common for dogs to have trouble with that and Innova, I don't know why.

Perhaps think of including some of the food he is USED to, even though it's yucky, on the third day, still mixed with plain yogurt and pumpkin. THen try the Cal Nat in with this mix for a couple of days, slowly lessening the Purina stuff and increasing the Cal Nat.

IF he is getting an upset tummy on the Cal Natural every time you add it in, even if it's just a little, then I would quit it and try another food. I had some dogs who couldn't handle it.

I'll say it again, I love love LOVE Eagle Holistic. I use the chicken. Or you could try Pinnacle, or Solid Gold. They have one that I like that is Bison meat. Or try any of the top foods but if he can't handle Cal Nat, he for SURE won't be able to handle Innova so stay away.

I would NOT add in any raw until you get his tummy sorted out.

No rice or yogurt, just chicken. Raw is actually very good for sensitive tummy dogs, there was someone here recently that tried it on theirs and it really helped.

For any food, make sure you are not feeding too much as giving more food than the stomach can digest usually gives loose stools. When in doubt you can try reducing the food amount a bit and see if it improves.

Also, moving to a new home is a big change. It's stressful even if it's not a negative event. Many dogs get loose stools from these types of big events so you may see it improve on it's own with time.

Congrats on the new addition!

You can find it online at jbpet.com. You can also find it in a lot of stores... they have a store locater on their website. I think it's Eaglepack.com or something like that. I get it online a lot. There is a puppy formula (how old is your puppy?) That might be good to get FIRST. Go through like a 20lb bag of puppy food and then switch to an all life stages food. That's what I usually tell puppy buyers to do. Usually start with a bag of puppy food and by around 4-5 months, switch to all life stages. Plus, since he's been used to puppy food it might be a tad closer to what he can handle. Honestly, if it were me, I would stop the Cal Nat just because I've seen that happen with a lot of dogs and it usually doesn't get better. I know the breed and the tummy issues.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with a dire rear right now! It's so hard on dogs with hair. You can always trim some of the hair by his butt (not a ton of it, but right near the uh, exit) and that will help. But when hairy dogs have upset tummies...it's just awful.

I would tell you to fast him for a day... but since he's a baby puppy and the pumpkin helped... just do that. You can also give him a baked potato or something easy later tonight.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I have a 4 year old gordon that CANNOT handle Cal Nat AT ALL!! It has such few ingredients that I thought it would be perfect, but it's the worst thing I've ever put him on. He does wonderfully on Natural Balance though.

It's so funny because I hear this all the time. It's like, the ingredients sound SO great, but the dogs can't handle the food for some reason.

Some breeds more than others. Innova is the other one that I LOVE on paper but my dogs can't eat at all.
