to a pediatrician who says that my 2 1/2yr old nurses not because he wants to or needs to, but out of habit?
Dh works with said pediatrician and after a recent casual discussion about breastfeeding (started by one of his co-workers who is weaning her almost 1yr old, claiming the baby is self-weaning), dh brought in Dr. Newman's handout "Nurse a toddler-why on Earth?" Well, both basically said that's nice, but I don't believe it, then came that comment about my ds is specific. :

I'm glad it's not your pediatrician, but I'll tell you what I told a ped. who told me that when dd was just 12 months --

How lucky your ds is to have parents like you and dh. Imagine how it'd be for him if he had parents like "said pediatrician".

Pediatricians are only qualified to give westernized medical advice, and westernized medicines, not to give such ignorant opinions of something so personal and innately important.

I ignored dd's pediatrician when, at dd's 1yr check-up, she said it was time to wean and give her "real food". That's when I woke up and realized that doctors are just human, with human opinions and human idiosyncrasies. They know the body (the shell of the body anyway) and medicine, and that's about it unless their mind is open enough to learn further.

These stories make me my pediatrician. I took ds for his 9 month check yesterday, and she asked if he was eating solids. He's not, and she said that was fine, and that it was important at this age that he nurses enough because breastmilk is the best nutrition he could have. She specifically mentioned iron and how great breastmilk is for iron consumption. I wish I could have recorded it, to show a friend who keeps telling me that I need to give ds cereal or formula as her ped told her that her breastmilk is lacking in iron and is nutritionally lacking after 6 months.....

My DH had me print that page out, so he had ammunition against his coworkers and relatives :LOL

Our pediatrician (okay, granted we haven't seen her in about 2.5 years, my kids are never sick and are not getting shots) said that it was a wonderful thing that DD1 was still nursing even after her baby sister was born! Told me what a good mother I am.
