I had a 19 week ultrasound yesterday. At first I was told was told I was having a girl we saw the 3 lines, she checked again still a girl. There were pics with the arrow saying it was a girl. After the scan was finished I asked her to check one more time. This time there was a penis, no lines. I now have an it's a boy pic. What???? Could it be twins? What were those lines? I called my midwife but she hasn't returned my call yet. What would you do? Oh, the baby was very active and flippy the entire time the tech had a hard time getting the measurements because there was so much movement.

What?!?! Crazy! Did the ultrasound tech act shocked? Did she say that this happens very often? Is she pretty experienced? Hmm... Maybe- Could you post the gender u/s pic(s) that you have?

She did act a bit shocked and baffled. She couldn't explain it. She said maybe he was in a funny position. But what were the lines? She was very young she couldn't have been doing this for too long.I was only given the boy pic. I wish I could put it up but I have no way to scan it in, maybe tomorrow my husband can.

I don't know if this makes a difference but I have an anterior placenta and I have been feeling lots of strong movement since 16 weeks.

Maybe the penis pic was actually the cord? I've heard of them being mistaken accidentally, and if she was in a hurry at the end, maybe?... Weird.

That sucks.... I doubt it was twins... I mean.. rarely a twin can hide in an ultrasound but this far along??? naw...

What a crazy situation. Hopefully you will have another u/s soonish??

I've heard of the cord getting in the way and being mistaken for a penis

Hmmm... If it's a boy, then perhaps the tech got a shot of the buttocks & indentation between, which might have seen like the 3 lines, especially if babe was so active.
If it's a girl, then maybe it was indeed a cord or limb sticking out there. Again, if the babe was so very active and if the tech was quite young and thus, not extremely experienced, then I can see how this could have happened.
But again, if dh can post a gender shot, that might help us try to decipher things lol.
Besides the baby being really active, were the images of the baby in general pretty clear?

U/s can be wrong. When I used to work in the children's section of a department store, we had about one woman a year who would arrive with a pile of baby clothes they needed to return because they actually had a girl instead of a boy. (And once, a boy instead of a girl.) It's not common, but it happens.

Just fyi, and no offense intended, but an ultrasound will show you the sex, not the gender. Today, most people consider sex and gender two different things.

Like I tell my children, an u/s is kinda like lights and shadows. Too much room for error. Not to mention that at 19wks the baby is really tiny, making the private parts really really tiny. I would just mark it up to "fate" wanting you to be surprised.

I recently heard that ultrasound gender predictions are 80% accurate... our US tech seemed pretty dang sure that it's a girl, but now I'm getting nervous about latching on to "girl" as part of this baby's identity...
Yet another reason I understand now why people choose to be "surprised"!

Yeah, even though I have had five u/s's and have been told each time it was a boy, I am not telling anyone for sure, since it could be wrong. And I don't really mind either way.

Words often have more then one meaning, just as the word sex has more than one meaning. Her use of the word gender, referring to whether her baby was male or female, was correct and appropriate.
