dd is 12 days old and still has a greenish stump with a little bit of plastic in it. dh is really worried about her stump, although there was only the tiniest bit of bleeding, no redness, and no tenderness (no signs of infection). i haven't bathed her yet because i have been bedridden with mastitis. : dh sometimes (daily? not sure) applies rubbing alcohol with a q-tip, even though i reassure him it will be fine if we just leave it alone. the aap book says that it should fall off within a few days to a couple of weeks. how long did it take for your babe's to fall off?? and what did it look like before and after? did you do anything to take care of it?

WHen my babe was born in June, the visiting nurse who came to our home said not to use anything on the stump. The bacteria that are affecting it will kill it and cause it to fall off. If you clean it with alcohol, you will prolong how long it takes to fall off as you are killing that bacteria. If you are worried about it, it is fine unless it is pussy and really stinky. Mildly stinky is ok. So, tell dh to stop cleaning it and it will fall off in a few days. If you want, he can clean it with just water on a Qtip.

Hope your mastitis gets better soon! I had a pretty nasty case after ds1 was born and that was the most miserable weekend of my life.

Jasper's stump fell off after 6.5 days. I was putting alcohol on it for the last 2 days because it was getting really stinky and a bit red, so that may have helped it fall off a little sooner. My firstborn's stump hung on for a week and a half. If your babe's stump looks fine, I'd just leave it alone.

I voted 7 or less days.
My first son's fell off after 13 days (used alchohol as directed on stump)
My second on day 3 (did not use anything on stump)
And my third on day 4 (did not use anything on stump) He had some slight oozing of blood for a week following the stump falling off, I just washed it with water.

DS1's cord stump fell off in under a week, but DS2's took over 2 weeks-- we did nothing with the cord either time, so I don't know why there was such a difference between the boys. :

Good luck with your mastitis-- I had that twice with DS1 and it is no fun at all. Be really careful because I felt like I was more susceptible the second time around (don't know if that's true, but it seemed like the same ducts got plugged more easily).

we used goldenseal powder on it for the first five days (until the capsule from mw was empty), she said it'd help it fall off faster (in 2-3 days), but it didn't. We didn't always leave it exposed to air though, and we partially bathed him, so that was partially our fault. I used alcohol on it for the next two days or so 3-5x/day and then it fell off. There was a little blood that day but that was all.

Noah's took almost 3 weeks to fall off for some reason. DD#1 it was 9 days, DS#2 was about a week, but Noah's hung for a lot longer.

I was starting to panic a little bit this time, but everything I read online said in some cases it can actually take up to a month if not longer (although that is relatively rare).

I hope you feel better soon! Mastitis sucks!

A study out of McMaster UNiversity showed that using alcohol increases the length the cord stays on because it kills both the bad and good bacteria.

Yeah, don't put anything on it. You can clean around it with a little water on a qtip or soft cloth. They do smell a bit, but if it were infected it would smell FOUL. And there would be redness around it and pus oozing out. Just try to keep the diaper and any clothes from irritating it too.

Hope you feel better soon.
