I could not believe what I heard at school today.
and

A mum with a little one telling her friend that she has a front carrier but she'd rather have the little one in the pushchair as she can't smoke with the carrier on. Apparently she can't light up very easily - not so worried about the little one being smoked on.

Sorry, I just had to let that out.

That IS annoying that her priorities are screwed up. However, I guess in this situation (since obviously she is going to smoke no matter what), at least the baby in the stroller might be farther away from the cigarette smoke exposure AND I'd be afraid that if the mom was smoking while slinging her baby... the baby could accidentally get burned by the cigarette, if she dropped it by accident or the grabbed at it or something.

This is one reason why I do not take my son to public playgrounds... the number of moms who smoke is crazy and it ticks me off that they are exposing all the kids to smoke.

The other part of the conversation was how she kept smoking when she was pregnant because it wouold have caused her stress to stop and stress would have harmed the baby so she didn't.

The friends agreed and said it was a pain when people who didn't know you asked why you were smoking when you were obviously pregnant.

As a long term sling wearing bf co sleeping family with a little dd who is a big fan of herwalking legs now that she is 2 and a bit I know there are people out there not like me, but sometimes I wonder how it is possible to be SO different. It isn't even worth beginning a discussion with folk with those attitudes.

I had a lady say that she loved my sling, because that way she could have both hands free to hold her beer and her cigarette. She was joking, but they say what pops into your head first is probably the closest to the truth. Good thing she doesn't have kids!

I feel sorry for kids with parents like that!

Oh geez. My babydaddy uses a wagon sometimes so he can smoke while he is out with the babe. This is a good way for him to get a break and smoke coz he can't smoke inside while she is with him. No big deal.

IRL I don't see anybody offering to pray for my child. I see smiles of approval and expressions of adoration toward him for bothering to spend time interacting with her at all, and for considering her needs enough to make sure she is far enough away to have clean air while he smokes.

Let's quit judging mamas so harshly.

My fiance actually told me he saw a dad babywearing downtown today.. which I thought was cool, but I guess the dad was smoking which really upset my fiance, (he is very anti smoking)

I wasn't sure how to feel..

'I'm happy AND angry!'

Hmmm... was the guy wearing a Babytrekker?

Might've been my babe...

Well.. the guy was wearing a sideways baseball cap and a bandanna I guess.. Bri just thought it was worth commenting on it because it was just a young mainstream looking dad.. lol

Anyways I am not trying to say it is right or wrong just mentioning it

Wow!!

Now, I can understand if a woman is addicted to cigarettes, tries to quit while pg, but is unsuccessful. But that BS about the stress of quitting being bad for the baby??
Why can't people just admit that smoking is unhealthy all around, but they're not currently ready to quit? Why make up those lame excuses?

A co-worker of mine (well, former co-worker) recently had a baby and she smoked through her entire pregnancy. Her doctor told her it would be better for her to cut down rather than stop cold turkey because of the stress it would cause, so she had the certain number of cigarettes each day that he said she could have. I don't know if she ramped back up to more after the baby was born, but I know she definitely didn't stop. I think I read an article lately about babies of stressed moms having higher levels of stress-related chemicals in their bodies, so there may be some truth to it.

I was sad for the baby, but was glad she at least cut down some. Addictions are tough, and she was definitely addicted, you know?

I was very proud of another friend of mine who stopped smoking when she got pregnant and hasn't had a cigarette since. I think using a stroller instead of babywearing probably is healthier for a baby, if mom is going to be smoking regardless.

My sil, who has always wanted a baby so bad its not funny, miscarried at about five months gestation and her doc specifically said it was from her smoking. Talk about stress? How would you like to live with that guilt? I know it is hard to quit, dh struggles with it, he has cut way down and only smokes outside, well away from dc and me but it is hard for him to just quit. I do understand its hard but..... you know, caffeine is addicting, maybe not as bad as smoking, but I know it was SO hard for me to give up while pg and bf, but I did.

I had another sil who smoked for her entire pg and made it to almost full term, but had a five pound baby and a BLACK placenta. And she was one who proclaimed the entire pg that, "smoking will NOT hurt my baby" which made me see red. I could have respect for, "I know its harmful but I really cant quit and will try to cut down" but to outright say its fine, in the face of all evidence to the contrary. Thats just insulting.
