Hi Gals,

My 8 mo son was born with one of his testes undescended. The only option presented to me thus far is surgery. I don't mind surgery so much, but he will need general anesthesia and that freaks me out. Any alternatives out there? Help would be much appreciated.

My grandson was born with an undescended testicle and we put surgery off till he was 3 yr. old. Often times the problem resoves itself before then.

Dd got two opinions and both said she should wait it out a bit. In meantime we've learned that we should have waited even longer.

Do some research before subjecting him to surgery and anaesthesia. You may be able to spare him that experience.

Also, we were extremely worried because my grandson is intact and we did not want the doctor to do us any 'favors' and circumcise him while he was 'under'. We had heard of several such situations. And we did not want his foreskin pulled back in order to catherized him should it become necessary.

Worry, worry, worry...

My DS also has an undescended testicle. Our ped has recommended waiting a year, and if it hasn't come down on its own, to get the surgery then.

Apparently, if you've had an undescended testicle, it increases your chances of getting testicular cancer. The reason they do the surgery to bring it down is so that if you do get testicular cancer, then it will be more noticeable. Since cancer usually develops later in life, it seems like waiting until the baby is a little older before getting the surgery would probably be okay...

I just called dd who's son had the undesc. testicle and she said the dr. told her that if he ever would get cancer in that testicle and it's not down it would be hard to notice. NOT that it gives a greater chance for cancer. At least she didn't get that info. ???

And she said, she believes cancer of the testicle is usually not something that is seen in children or young adults. It's mostly seen in old men. Of course there are always exceptions. If she had to make the decision over again, she would wait longer. She knows of another boy whose parents waited and by the time he was 4 yr. it did come down on its own.

Just thought I'd let you know.
