Unit Study on Ancient China...where do I begin?

834 Views 9 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Catherine12
It's for my 1st grader. We have three months left of school and I asked him what he wanted to learn about. I gave him a few options and he chose Ancient China. I tried google and all the options made my HEAD SPIN!! He's a visual/hand-on learner. I just don't even *know* where to start.

I ordered a few books from the Library and that's as far as I've gotten. Thanks for any thoughts!

Evan Moor has a "Pocket Book" on ancient civilizations that covers it.
In some of my history programs, they suggest the Ancient China Treasure Chest. But when I looked it up on Amazon, it was no longer offered.

Also, this lady for $13 will mail you a packet full of Chinese items. I can vouch that she really will send it and it contains everything pictured on the page. Oops, it is $14 now.

A quick google brings up these Ancient China unit studies. Note: I have not read any of the links in depth, just wanted to be helpful.

We learned a little bit about China from FIAR rowing Ping. Ancient China in particular we'll cover later this spring. Can't wait!

We read aloud "Day of the Dragon King" Magic Tree House #14, it's about ancient China. I used some library books like "Ancient China" by DK Eyewitness Books and some books about Chinese Dragons (my son's main interest) and "Adventures in Ancient China, Good Times Travel Agency" by Linda Bailey. We went out for Chinese food and are revisiting the subject this week when our library is having a class for the Chinese New Year.

It was kind of cool when we visiting my in laws and my niece was watching Mulan, my seven year pointed out a few historical inaccuracies to me.
You could raise silk worms- this website will send you some:

They also have plastic models and books.

I see you've already ordered some books so maybe you won't be interested in this. Our current read aloud is Little Pear by Eleanor Frances Lattimore... sort of a Huckleberry Fin in China. It is delightful!
we did a unit study that included china a couple of years back when we used "galloping the globe". i blogged about it & listed our plans. some of the resources may help you (but some may not. here's the link though: http://mytwomonkeys.webs.com/homesch...hived=1&page=8 ...just scroll down to the entry that says "galloping through asia". hth.
This site has lots of info:

Or, depending on where you live you can take my option
I'm going to hit the nearest asian grocery where they have all manner of chinese style bits & peices from coins, to lucky frogs, writing kits and chop sticks. I'm going to take the boys with me and let them browse and check things out as part of the fun.

I use History Odyssey so I had a base to start with in the Usborne internet linked encyclopedia of world history
Then I hit the library website & picked up some more books with lots of pictures and neat information that ISN"T in long story form...as my boys do not have the patience for SOTW

And books like Ping are awesome tie in's for 'fun' reading.

I did an ancient China unit study with my kindergartner earlier this year. One of the really fun things we did was make paper (since paper was invented in China). We also had a lot of fun cooking Chinese food. Other than that, I mostly used online resources/the library to find some books, info, coloring pages etc.
