Here's the latest dispatch on what you can do save legal NYC homebirth in the wake of the St. Vincent's closure.

ACTION ALERT- Part Two
The Midwifery Modernization Act needs you!

Action Alert: Part Two

Your first round of calls last week in response to the home birth crisis in NYC made a huge impact - THANK YOU!

The Department of Health, Department of Education and City of NY were flooded with your calls and e-mails in support of a woman's right to choose to birth at home with a trained, licensed midwife. Word of the response made its way to legislators, many of whom are taking a fresh look at the Maternity Modernization Act (MMA)!

The biggest barrier to accessing midwifery care in New York State is the Written Practice Agreement, our best chance to remove the WPA from the law is right now with the passing of the MMA!

We need all of you to call, email or visit your state representatives and tell them two things:

1. I'm calling to request that you support, co-sponsor and vote for the Midwifery Modernization Act (Senate bill - S5007. Assembly bill - A8117)

2. Please urge the the chairs of the Higher Education Committee
(Senator Savitsky and Congresswoman Glick) to move the bill to the
floor.

You are welcome to share your personal stories of why you are passionate about a woman's right to birth with midwives. Remember that this is not just a home birth issue. Approximately 100 midwives From all across the state who practice in a variety of settings (hospital, home and birth center) are affected by this law.

To find out who your representatives are and how to reach them, go to both of these sites and enter your zip code.

If you live in an area with more than one Assemblyperson or Senator, which is quite common in NYC, try the website below too.

http://nymap.elections.state.ny.us/nysboe/
