Update: Baby Sighted! Has anyone ever seen just a yolk sac one day, but a fetus

I can't even begin to express how relieved I am!

At the end of my U/S (in other words, after lying there crying off and on for almost 30 minutes) the tech told me that she "didn't see anything wrong." I had to drag it out of her (they're not really supposed to "diagnose") and she told me that there is a 7w1d fetus and a heartbeat or blood flow to it.

I was on a total high when my doc called to discuss the results. There is a concern; a small area of fluid behind the implantation. It could be blood, possibly a small abruption and we're going to watch it and have a follow up U/S but it *should* correct on its own. I'm supposed to take it easy and see her again on the 25th.

I had my first u/s today at 7w4d and the doctor could only see what she *thought* was a yolk sac and nothing else.

She seemed quite confident that it's very possible the embryo could be hiding behind the yolk sac (the pregnancy is at the top corner of my uterus and I do have a tipped uterus) and that when I return for another u/s done with more sophisticated equipment tomorrow that we'll be able to see more.

It's possible that I'm not quite as far along as previously thought, but from what I can tell by looking at others' u/s pics online, the only way that this could NOT mean bad news for me would be if I were only 5.5 weeks or so, and that's impossible.

I had an anembryonic gestation (blighted ovum, pregnancy with no fetal matter detected) that I m/c at 10.5 weeks in March and I cannot accept that this is probably happening again.

I guess I'm grasping....it seems outside the realm of possibility that this is just a fluke and will turn out to be a viable pregnancy. But maybe this happens as often as the doctor implied and I shouldn't despair?

I didn't have it happen the next day, but a week later we did see a baby. In fact, the first time I went in, the yolk sac was measuring about two weeks small; no heartbeat. One week later, there was a completely normal-sized embryo with a beating heart.

Are they following your hCG numbers? That will tell you a lot as well.

Best of luck to you!

Thank you--that does give me some hope. We stopped tracking hCG a couple weeks ago, but I had another today after the u/s. My numbers are like this:

5/27 - 279
5/29 - 831
6/01 - 3563
6/15 - 58,423

Today's number is definitely within normal, but shows a marked slow-down from my previous doubling rate. But the doc says that's normal.

I hope my situation turns out to be like your's. Do you mind if I ask approx, how far along you were at the first u/s?

Here's my scoopie.

I went in at 5 1/2 weeks and saw nothing but a little blop of roundness. Was told there was maybe a fhr seen in the corner of my uterus but not sure. So pretty accurate for dates.

Went back 4 weeks later (should have been 9 1/2 weeks by then) and was told I had a TINY fetus with hb and measuring 7w pregnant. Was seriously freaked out because there was obviously no way this was possible, due to previous u/s and the fact that dh had a vasectomy and we had NO sex after the date conception took place
ONE act of sex in 3 months, it was darn obvious when baby was conceived!!

Went back 4 weeks later (13 1/2 weeks according to dates) and baby measured a plump 14 weeks! Whatever happened at the middle u/s will forever remain a mystery. But it freaked me out!!

s mama!

Don't give up hope yet! I seriously was sooooo upset in the middle there.... but it ended up JUST FINE

YES! I had the exact same thing happen. I had a blighted ovum about a year before. Then when I got pregnant and went in for my first ultrasound at 7 wks we couldn't see a fetus, just the sack. I went back at 9 weeks and there was a baby with a heartbeat. My uterus is tipped, too, and the doctor said that makes it harder to see. I'm now 25 wks. I will be hoping that the same thing happens to you!! Good Luck!
