Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to thank everyone for welcoming me here and answering my questions with so much information-this really is a great place! I posted earlier in the week about abnormal test results that said my protein levels were 19x normal rate, and chances of downs were 1 in 144-I had my level II ultrasound on Weds, and our baby is fine!! No markers for downs, so our numbers went up to 1 in 300. Normal for my age is 1 in 600-and the other docs we met with informed us that my OB read our results incorrectly and that our level for AFP protein was really .06, not 19. something as she circled and reported. The DR said she did misread the report, and we were told that the spine looks good!!!

So many people felt she should apologize-my husband and I went trhough five days of misery.. I had a counseling appmnt setup, It was so horrible.... I had to go back in yesterday bc of cramping and slight brownish blood.. and she basically questioned why I chose not to get the amnio-now maybe she didn't get report b/c it was just the day before and they were sending to the other office, but I had to tell her that they said the 19 was wrong and it was supposed to be the .06..she didn't really say much and then just said they must have changed the numbers

So, I def want to switch DRS, I am just not sure if I should stay in the practice-I am 18 weeks and many people hae told me to not switch practices, just find another dr in the same practice.. I just don't know how to deal with telling the new DR and why this other DR didn't own up to anything?.. thanks for reading and we are so grateful that our baby is healthy!!!

Thank you all again-this is a wonderful place! wishing everyone a happy and healthy 9 months

Hugs to everyone!

Wow that is great news!

If you want to switch practices, I think you should go ahead and do it, it doesn't matter how far along you are. I recently switched to a midwife practice when I was 23 weeks.

Good luck

: Congratulations!

I'm now at 22 weeks, and wouldn't think twice about switching my dr if I thought they didn't have my best interests at heart (or I had lost confidence in them)! (luckily I love my midwife!) As for if you should stay in the same practice, if we had been through what you and your husband just went through, I would go interview a few drs that others had good experiences with and be totally honest about why your there. Pick who you feel is the best fit, regardless of what practice they are in. I mean I'm emotional enough these days, expecting parents certainly don't need any unnecessary added stress.

Good luck, mama!

You must be feeling so much better!
I just wanted to second that switching practices shouldn't be a big deal. I didn't even start my prenatal care this time until 17 weeks and then saw my current midwife around 20.
You should do whatever you want to do.
All the best with the rest of your pregnancy!

I'm glad you're doing better; your experience sounds very similar to the one I had this week. I had to have a level II ultrasound because of renal reflux in the baby's kidneys, so we went to our first appt with the perinatologist. My regular OB said NOTHING about the possibility of Down Syndrome, but this lady harped on it, and my age (29) as though it were a serious concern. Like, never mind possible structural problems or UTI's for the baby, this doctor had me convinced it was Downs.
:

However, I found articles that said that there was only a weak correlation between the reflux and Downs, and have since concluded that this doctor needs a lesson in how to deal with pregnant women who are having their first child.

: I'm so glad you got good news and the reassurance that your baby is healthy. I agree with the PPs that it's ok to switch. You should be able to trust your doctor, and while everyone makes mistakes, I would be really irritated to not hear an apology if my doctor put me through that kind of agony.

If you stay in the same practice and tell the new doc why you switched, and the old doc gets wind of it, so much the better. Maybe it will help her understand what a significant impact the experience had on you.

Oh that is so good
:.

I would switch drs in a heartbeat, no questions asked this is my baby and my health. I don't want to go to someone who doesn't know how to read test results or admit they may have misread. Switch now, you're only 1/2 way through. It's not like you are 38 wks or something.

I am going to a different doc this time, I have no problems with my other I just like this one better. Plus she is the one who actually was there for my labor and her and her colleague made the call when it was apparent that my DD and I both were in danger. They made the call for my emergency c/s and they were(and are) both wonderful.

Your baby, your body, your decision...end of story. HTH.

Congrats on your pregnancy and yea that it turned out to be a mistake.

If it were me, I would switch to another group all together. OBs and MWs are people also and make mistakes that is why there are safeguards and serious things should always be double checked. The reason I would switch is how your current OB handled the situation. I would have looked for any good care provider to have listened to you, double checked the numbers and reports, maybe even made a call or two and then at the very least told you that they were sorry for the mistake and the stress that you must have been under b/c of the mistake. In my area, you can end up with any OB in the office at your birth so I would not feel comfortable

If you want to switch then I would switch. It's not at all unusual for people to switch practices during the pregnancy. It's your body and your baby.

I was thinking of switching myself to another practice because of issues I've had with my OB but decided not to since I've recently seen another physician in the practice and I have my U/S scheduled at this point and don't want to mess that up. But if after the U/S I decide for some reason to go elsewhere I will look in to it. I live in a small town and unfortunately it's hard to find an OB that does prenatal care that will even answer their phone and return my messages.
At least my OB answers all incoming calls with a live person.

That's wonderful! Definitely switch doctors. Could it be that your doctor was reading another person's chart when giving you the bad results? In any case, that shows lack of attention to detail and that's the last person you want delivering your baby.
