So I went to see the breast surgeon that my GP recommended, and OMG she was awesome. I took DS with me, because that way I could nurse right before she examined my breast, so that she'd have the best chance of feeling what I'm feeling. She was so cool with him, giving him little things to play with to keep him happy and occupied and talking to him the whole time. She also struck me as very supportive of my breastfeeding relationships with my kiddos; congratulated me on "making such a good choice for your babies" and urged me to continue as long as possible. Rare to find a doc like that. Most of them are stunned that I'm "still nursing," even though the twins are ONLY 11 months old for crying out loud.

Anyway, she felt the lump and said that in her opinion it's most likely a cyst, based on the shape and feel of it. She recommended that we start with ultrasound just to see if anything looks suspicious in there.

I was confused; my GP had told me that ultrasound was not an option on a lactating breast, that they wouldn't be able to see it. But this doc laughed and said that was a common reason a lot of women were told to wean and that it was "ridiculous that doctors know so little about breastfeeding," and that she had radiologists who had experience with reading scans of lactating women and that it would be just fine.

So we'll see what they find. But she seemed pretty confident that cancer was an extremely unlikely possibility, and urged me not to waste energy worrying about it.

I'm glad you found such a great doctor!

I've been following along as I'm currently going through the same thing -- only I'm 36 weeks pregnant, not nursing.

My ob/gyn says everything feels normal to him and he can't feel a lump (I hope he's right!) but I feel something and so does my midwife. So, I'm having an ultrasound on Monday. I'm nervous but have every reason to think it's just a normal, hormonal pregnancy change so I'm trying not to worry.

Hopefully we'll both get good news soon!
