So I sent the kids to my mom's house this week because she wanted them to visit. She asked for school work and I told her that I wasn't sending Alexis' because we were working on division and she was having a hard time with it. If she wanted to help with math Alexis would love to help cook or grocery shop or measure distance while hanging Halloween decorations, etc. When she brought Alexis back she took Aspen. I sent Aspen's math book and told him which chapter to do "if Grandma wanted him to do some school work". She did of course. I wasn't home when she dropped him off today. She just IM'd me and the conversation went as follows:

Quote:
Kim says:
did ryan tell you about aspens math?
Wendy says:
no
Wendy says:
he didn't tell me
Kim says:
oh..
Kim says:
well it's kinda like this.....
Kim says:
he started by telling me that his next page was subtraction...
Kim says:
and it was carrying numbers...
Kim says:
and apparently i couldn't explain it to him right..
Kim says:
because he wasn't getting it..
Kim says:
errr.. i mean borrowing numbers..
Kim says:
then i turned his pages back and figured out that he skipped a few... lol
Kim says:
so i had him do the addition...
Wendy says:
lol
Kim says:
and he did awesome at that..
Kim says:
i told him which ones were wrong and he fixed them
Kim says:
and i told him you were an awesome teacher
Kim says:
I just think he needs flash cards or something so that he can memorize stuff and it won't take him so long
Kim says:
he likes to tally stuff
Kim says:
and you may want to erase the page of subtraction i was doing with him
Kim says:
because...
Kim says:
i helped him with all of them.. and he still wasn't getting it.. I'm a sucky teacher
Kim says:
so you can start over... lol.. SORRY
Wendy says:
hahaha, that's ok
Wendy says:
that's why I didn't send Alexis with anything
Kim says:
I think i confused him
Wendy says:
because it's taken forever for me to figure out how to teach her
Kim says:
oh thanks.. lol
Wendy says:
and I know it's not easy
Kim says:
aahh ok
Wendy says:
some days I'm still shaking my head going "why isn't she getting it??"
Kim says:
well if I confused aspen with subtraction.. sorry
Kim says:
but i think i sidetracked him by giving him addition.. lol
Wendy says:
nah, he picks it up quickly enough, it won't take long for me to explain it so he gets it
Kim says:
and alexis is a thinker too..
Kim says:
they both tend to over analyze things.. alexis more than aspen
Wendy says:
yeah, they're both really smart
Wendy says:
yep
Wendy says:
she's always done that
Wendy says:
which makes learning so much harder for her
Kim says:
well they are both really smart..
Wendy says:
because she over-thinks what she's doing
Wendy says:
and it can't seem to just be simple in her head
Kim says:
but on the other hand .. once they get it .. they get it better than most
I think that I may not ever have trouble with her asking about school work again, lol.

That is amazing! I am so glad she now understands and seems to appreciate what she is having a hard time with!
