DD really wants a backpack. But we cant think of a school use for it, and thats what she wants it for. I offered she could use it for other things like picnics, and such, but she insists that she wants to have one to use for school.

Being that we live in a small house, have a homeschool area for all of her items, and shares a room with her 2 year old sister... I just am not sure what she could use one for.

Any ideas?

Oh gees,. just get her one and let it do whatever it does.

sometimes we take work on the road with us, there are field trips and co-op and scouts and anywhere a small child goes there will be crud to bring home, snacks to cart with, things to show grandma . . . . .

There isnt a problem with her having one, she wants to know what she can do with it.

Thank you Mamas for the other ideas, field trips library books, she will love it!

Also for picking up items to collect on nature walks - twigs, leaves, pieces of ferns, pebbles, shells, etc., to do something creative with when she gets home - a little plastic container inside to protect some of the more fragile items is a good idea. Also to hold a water bottle & snack on such walks. The pack can hang on a hook or peg to keep it up out of the way.

They're also great for stuffing a jacket or raincoat or collapsible umbrella into - whether to be prepared, or whether to get them out of the way when it turns out you don't need them.

My son and I are packing right now for a long roadtrip, and we end up using them to stuff all sorts of things in. Being soft, collapsible, and easy to grab and carry, they're more convenient than harder containers for storing lots of things on trips. I also use one sometimes for my art supplies - paint brushes, spray bottles, and assorted stuff...

We use them for tons of things!

Library books
extra clothes/jacket/hat for trips to the park in spring/fall
nature walks (notebook, ID books, snack)
snack, lunch, bug spray, sunscreen for park trips in summer
snacks, drinks, books, games for car trips
to hold their stuff if they are in a sport or class where they have to change

Right now we have three in constant use; one for DD's cheer stuff, one for library books and one for all the paraphenalia to go to the lake (sunscreen, bug repellant, first aid kit, hand sanitizer, inhaler, benedryl, drinks and snacks)

If she wants it specifically for school you could keep notebooks, sketchbooks, pencils, any workbooks if you use them, books being currently read inside so you could easily take *school* with you.

yeah, basicly you can use it whenever you go out.

one of the kids that i enjoy taking care of from time to time is homeschooled. she asked for a backpack after she and i went out to lunch (got salads athte organic cafe) and i was carrying a lot of books in my pack. She asked if i went to school, and i told her i was 'unschooling' or teaching myself. Anywhere i go, i carry some books that interest me, pens, paper, and colored pencils. Then, i can learn whenever and where ever i want.

so, she got a backpack so that she can unschool and homeschool. now, she doesn' tleave the house without something to do in her back pack. she's MUCH easier to take care of now. We went to the park for a picnic and a hike, and since i eat so slowly (everyone knows this), she just pulled out a pad of paper and her pencils and started drawing pictures of the trees. She told me she was trying to learn about different kinds of trees and wanted to draw pictures of the different ones in the park.

she said she likes the trees with purple leaves.
