Is it safe? We are being absolutely overrun with ants here. I hate to use pesticides of any sort ever, especially when I'm pg, but it's getting really bad. I'm wondering if using ant traps (as opposed to sprays) would be safe.

The poison is inside the trap. Sweepers will get rid of ants you see but won't get rid of the ants and nests you don't see. If ants take poison back to their colony it will end the problem at the root. I would go ahead and use the traps because the poison is contained and not floating all around (like with sprays). If you handle them, wash your hands well afterwards. Maybe pass the chore on to DP or a friend for extra peace of mind.

No, the traps aren't as bad as the sprays, but in my experience they just don't work. We recently had a HUGE ant problem in our bathroom, and the traps did absolutely nothing. Spraying vinegar along the ant trails helped a little, but they didn't go away until we found where they were coming in (cracks in the window) and completely sealed it off. I'd try to do that before I resorted to the traps.

We had ants so bad we hired a pest control service...they were here the other day and sprayed the windows and outside the house where they were coming in. He didn't do the baseboards cuz we have pets...but I didn't even think to tell him I was pg. The ants are gone and I feel fine...

Man I hate ants...good luck!

I use Terro? I think it is. From our exp traps never worked and I always had to worry about the dog finding it. The terro we just put one drop in the ant trail and in 1-2 days all the ants are gone. It's for those tiny sweat ants, but may work on reg size ants too. You don't even touch the stuff, but you could always have dh do it. We got it at home depot or lowes. Just make sure if you have animals or kids they don't see you put the drop down, because then they'll want to go play with it.
Oh, it says to always put the drop on this little piece of cardboard that comes with it, but blah blah. I've put drops behind outlets and right in the ant path-works much better than the stupid cardboard piece.

We have a "green" bug guy that uses all natural products. He gave us baits that work *wonderfully* AND are perfectly harmless to humans. The two he left us to use on our own (should ants show up again after he sprayed - and they eventually did in a totally different spot) was also a Terro brand. We put it out and my boys watched for a few days as the ants grew in number, attracted to the bait, and then disappeared completely!! Very cool science experiment, if you will, and no toxic chemicals!

Thanks for the responses! I'm going to check out that Terro brand. I'd love to find something non-toxic. The ants are all over the livingroom and kitchen now and I've been finding them climbing on the couch while I'm watching tv. Ick!

I called poison control once over ant baits and she said that most of them are virtually harmless to humans. I called about Raid Double Control Ant Baits and was told that even if a child were to consume the poisoned cream contained inside the bait there would be no problem. My child had just handled the bait.

The poison control person said that there is only enough poison in the baits to kill the ants, which are way smaller than we are.

So, if I were you, I would put down the bait and wash your hands afterwords and not think anything more about it.

Oh, and Terro is great for sweet ants. And I have had great success with the above mentioned Raid baits for grease ants.
