Utah, which has the highest percentage of HBs in the country.

They recently licensed midwives in Utah and now they are making a bill to "define normal birth"

Feel free to read the whole bill
http://le.utah.gov/~2007/bills/sbillint/sb0243.htm

The MWs are protesting it, as these are some of the following new restrictions:

You cannot have a homebirth IF:

you have had a baby bigger than 8 lbs 13 oz before, and new moms must have an US to make sure baby is no bigger than that

No VBACS whatsoever, even if moms has had vaginal births since then, also no breeches

You are over age 35!!!!

You have GBS, diabetes, a family history of a genetic disease or any STD

You have had more than 3 miscarriages or 1 miscarriage or EVEN A THREATENED MISCARRIAGE or ANY BLEEDING that occurred when you were 14 weeks or beyond

Any previous preterm birth at 36 weeks or less, or any history of PP bleeding or if you ever had a cerclage

Anyone with an ABNORMAL PAP SMEAR

if you didn't have prenatal care prior to 28 weeks

if your waters have been broken for 18 hours

Ultrasound size estimates are often very very wrong.

Some things I don't have issues with, others I do. I'm sure that any MW is going to do her own screening to determine if the Mom is a good candidate for a homebirth.

come on give me a break now, I had a doctor try 4 different times and each time it came back abnormal because she didn't get enough cells :
and that risks me out of a hb, they need to get a clue about women, pregnancy and birth and stop letting a old male ob/gyn write their laws

They are definetely trying to rule out HB for everyone!! The US thing alone and the limit for the baby's weight???? And why in the world does it matter how big a previous baby was?

There are some angry and greedy medical people with their eyes on all the "deliveries" they are missing our on Utah!! Unbelievable!

Lay midwives would not be regulated that way, but they are not allowed to give medicine like pit after delivery for bleeding.

Its just a real shame. And it IS written by a woman who used to be a nurse and her husband the OB. @@

She's married to an OB/Gyn. It won't pass, I'm sure, but it is certainly infuriating.

Some of the ladies have said she was quoted two years ago as saying that women stupid enough to give birth at home deserve to die, but I haven't found proof of that.

Just gaining more control over our lives.

It all fits in with 'homeland security'.

Which is why I prefer to not have midwifery be liscened. It always ends up coming with the cost of jumping through some organizations hoops like insurance companies ect.

That's how many midwives, including mine, feel about it, so she still is not licensed. The only advantage is that licensed midwives can use pitocin.

I live in Utah and have had three homebirths, one planned homebirth that ended up an induction at 35.5 weeks, and three planned hospital births.

I had a direct entry midwife to attend all three homebirths and was also my midwife for my homebirth turned hospital birth. She was awesome and so very careful of following my wishes in birthing safely that I trusted her completely.

I didn't know of this bill until I read about it here. I ignore the news for the most part. This bill is horrible!! If it had been in place, I'd never have been able to birth at home.

I think the bottom line is about money, not safety. We have one birthcenter in SLC. One. Our hospitals are pretty rigid and very heavy on interventions, restrictions and epidurals. The women by and large obey their doctors, equating MD with being a G-O-D.

It just makes me sick...

I have to say that I'd be surprised if this passed, HB is just really popular in Utah and most of the women I've known used lay midwives. I'd think the media coverage and the reaction to this would be quite outspoken, but I haven't been following the news closely for quite awhile now.

I'd like to think it wouldn't pass but Utah is notorious for passing crazy laws just to restrict freedoms of others.

Just look at our liquor laws and now the new smoking ban that is effective very soon. Chaps my "donkey" that the religion of some here dictate the lives of so many. I see this new proposal as just that. How dare women think for themselves? They need men (doctors) to tell them how to birth safely! We must save these simple females from themselves!
