Hi mama's... this question is in regard to my friend who has 8 month old twin dd's and I don't have many details... but I was wondering about this because it sounds fishy to me!!!

ONe of the little gals got a fever that went up quite high (104+)ish and has been diagnosed with a UTI. She is on antibiotics now and apparently all is well, however the mom says that doc wants to do some rather invasive testing to ensure the baby doens't have bladder reflux or some other UTI disease and that long term antibiotic therapy may be needed.
: Oh, and of coarse the.... 'if you don't do these tests, and the baby does have this condition... kidney failure..... brain damage (from the fever?).... etc...." WTF?

Aren't UTI's fairly common???? It seeems excessive to want further tests after just 1 UTI???? Doesn't it??????

What do you think?

It is recommended now when a child under a year old has a UTI that they be tested via the VCUG to determine if there is reflux. The reason behind this is if it is left untreated it can and does cause kidney damage. My dd had the test done. She didnt have reflux. The test is very invasive, it hurts and it is tramatic. She only had the 1 UTI and if I had it to do over I would have waited to see if she had another then done the test. It was awfull.

Personally I would tell her to wait and see if it happened again then go with the VCUG but that is my person opinion. It just seems like putting them thru the test for just one UTI is extreme.

If the reflux is present then they would need to be on a antibiotic all the time with repeat testing every year or so to see if it is getting worse or better. Some outgrow it some dont and need surgery.
