What are some natural ways to fight a bladder or urinary tract infection. I may have one but would rather not go on antibiotics again (just got off them 3 weeks ago for strep) unless necessary. I'm having a lot of pain and am not able to tell if its a UTI or constipation.

uva ursi
cranberry concentrate (not juice)
d-mannose capsules/powder

all can be found at a good health food store. not sure if they can kick one if you already have it, but if you do have one and you feel you're prone to getting another pre-baby, then these are good helpers. i'm not positive about uva ursi while pregnant, but my midwife suggested d-mannose capsules/powder. i'm normally pretty prone to uti's.

yuck. hang in there and good luck. utis are the worst.

Uva ursi is not safe to be taken in large amounts during pregnancy. It puts too much strain on the kidneys and pregnancy strains the kidneys already. My MW said to never take more than 2 doses, and she even advises against taking the 2 doses unless it is 100% necessary.

I fought off a UTI a few months ago by drinking tons of water and unsweetened cranberry juice, cutting back on sugar, taking 2000 extra mg of vitamin c, and taking acidopholus. I still take acidopholus a few times a week to keep yeast and UTIs away.

I have beaten UTIs if in the early stage by drinking lots of UNSWEETENED Cranberry Juice (plus water).

FYI: Cheapest pure cranberry juice I know of is from Trader Joe's.

Limit sugar in your diet. That's what the nasties like to eat.

If you drink coffee, I'd recommend cutting it out until you are 100% clear of the UTI. I learned in college that I can drink coffee or have sex, but not both unless I limit sugar and/or drink pure cranberry juice daily, or I will get UTIs.

What everyone else said; and DRINK DRINK DRINK. See if you can "flush" it out. It's also VERY important to make sure you COMPLETELY empty your bladder. So when you're done, stay seated a while longer, shift positions (bend some more forward, hollow your back), and see if there comes more.

Hope you fight it off!

The last UTI I fought off I was on vacation in Florida...:

I bought bottles of water then lay in bed reading and drinking for a whole day. I wasn't just drinking little sips, either; I drank until my stomach could not contain anymore liquid. When I felt like there was a little room I topped it off with some more water (don't know if this is safe in pregnancy or not). There was no pain by mid-day and no sign of UTI the next.
