I just saw this online (article title 'biologists seek safer whooping cough vaccine')

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15610836/

I cannot believe the non-chalant manner in which this is written. It sounds crazy-alarming to me! and it is not written clearly, either, (maybe it's because it's 2am for me??). and there are no numbers, stats, info.
I also cannot believe that it assumes we will just keep giving these vaccines until we improve on them.??!!!!

I don't really get that sentence. Is the author saying that people who get whooping caugh may have neurological damage from the whooping caugh AND that you can have neurological damage from the vax?

Also, I thought that the the acellular vaccine is called DTaP? Is that correct?

Is that article just poorly written?

He is saying you could get it from either the actual disease or the vaccine.

Correct!

But in the article it does say : DPT vaccine or acellular vaccine

Either the DPT or the acellular which is the DTaP can cause neurological damages.

That is what I thought, but is that actually TRUE? I never heard you could have neurological damage from pertussis, but I don't know all that much about it YET! Still learning here.

ANYTHING is possible. We can never say that this or that can not happen. A child could cough so violently and damage a nerve. Who knows?

My three cousins had wc all at the same time and it didn't seem that bad to me. They played and when they stared to cough they ran outside because they knew they would throw up afterwards. I played with them but never got it. Or maybe I had it but had already been immune and therefore showed no symptoms. Which can happen.

I have never read that anyone got neurological damage from wc. It is a new one to me, too. And the pharma cartel spends a LOT of money figuring out how to scare people into buying their products. I would think this is one of their tactics.

But like I said, anything is possible.

You probably could. Except... when you get pertussis naturally, it will most likely happen once in your life, maybe two-three times, if you're unlucky enough, or not at all, if you are lucky. Also, it is rather uncommon to have it naturally in the first months of life when you're the most vulnerable, especially if your mother had it naturally and you're breastfed. The vaccine, however, is recommended 4-5 times in the early childhood, starting at 2 months, and now further boosters are available for adults throughout their lifetime. And natural pertussis is just that - natural pertussis, without added diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, preservatives, etc. And it comes the way your body is best able to handle it - through your nose and throat, as opposed to being injected directly inside you bypassing half the system.

It looks like they changed the article - there's no Hetrick in the article *I* just read... Interesting. Merck (or whoever makes the vax) probably called and told them to change the article. Hmm...

An infant who had complications could have neurological damage. It's rare, though. I've not even seen the statistics on it, so it can't be common or we'd all know exactly how often it happened, because they'd be shoving it in our faces as proof of how dangerous pertussis was.

Interesting. When googling to learn more about this, I found this writeup from May:
http://www.asm.org/Media/index.asp?bid=42799

These observations suggest that S1 subunit of Pertussis toxin directly associates with neuronal proteins such as AT2, inhibit their functions, and lead to neuronal damage. Thus, the Pertussis toxin can cause dangerous cell damage, through a mechanism that was not known, or targeted, during the designing of acellular vaccines.

So how can anyone, us "NFL types" as I've been called, or mainstream as all get out, read this article, in a mainstream publication, and STILL GIVE the Dtap?

Yes, either the disease or the vax can cause brain damage. But, if you get the vax, you are GUARANTEED to come in contact with the toxin. If you don't get the vax, you may or may not come in contact w/ pertussis in your lifetime. I only know one person who has had it (my mom).

And getting the disease is not the end of the world. My dh had it several years ago and it was just a nagging cough all winter long. My sister had it the same your, same story.

No, actually you WILL come in contact with it at some point in your life - several times. It's unavoidable. The reason you think you only know one person who's had it is because it's generally misdiagnosed in adults, teens and vaccinated children or completely undiagnosed when adults don't go to the doctor for it.

But don't start going to the doctor if you think you have it. They won't know what to do and panic. Who knows what they'll sell you? The cure for something you didn't even know you had.

You know: a healthy person is one not yet diagnosed.

Pretty much everybody catches pertussis every few years. But that's actually a good thing, since it keeps your immunity to it strong.

Or worse....send the pharmaceutical nazis (aka the health dept) after you. Which is what a nurse that I used to work with told me what would happen if I tested positive for TB and didnt' get it treated.

Interesting. My dh had a nagging cough all last winter. He finally went to the dr and they sent him home with some samples of various drugs that I'm sure the pharma reps had dropped off including allergy meds and reflux meds. I bet it was pertussis!
