Vacuum cleaners

My second question thread of the day

Our vacuum broke and we need to get a new one. It was a $50 (maybe more but less than $100) Bissel and I LOVED it. It worked GREAT for about 2 years. But it had plastic parts and dh said the motor fan was eaten away from vacuuming up marbles, pennies, paperclips, etc (yeah, I'm not great at that, huh?
). We got a replacement fan but can't find a reverse threaded nut (the one that came with the new fan doesn't fit
). We've exhausted all our options and have accepted that we have to throw away this perfectly fixable vacuum because we can't find a 10 cent nut. (I'm still pissed off but it's been over a month now and I can't even stand to look at the disected vacuum cleaner anymore - I GIVE UP!).

So, any recommendations for a new one? What I liked about the old one was

#1 It worked GREAT. We have a dog, a cat, a five year old and a two year old. I can't have some wimpy little, push-the-dirt-around vacuum.

#2 It is light. I borrowed my sister's when this first broke and OMG! I honestly didn't realize I had wrist problems until I started using hers! Maybe hers is really bad, I don't know, but mine is much easier to use. I don't need an 8 lb Oreck or anything, butI want a machine that is reasonable and doesn't kill your wrists pushing it around the room.

#3 I could afford it
I read the thread on here raving about Dyson and just about choked on my water when I saw the price
: :LOL I didn't pay that much for my first car! (or my second, or my third, or the one I'm currently driving :LOL!) We did just get a tax return and I can afford a hundred or two, but I'm not willing to go nuts. Especially since we have one (count 'em - 1) carpeted room in the entire house.

#4 I need attachments. I borrowed MIL's vacuum the other week and was surprised to find it had no attachments! I honestly didn't know you could buy them without. Well, I need them.

Ok, any suggestions?

Ok I know you choked on the price of the Dyson, but it is VERY MUCH worth it! I got mine off of e-bay from a power seller. IU got the highest model for less then the animal costs in the store. Another friend of mine got the animal for I think $320? off of there.

HTHT
Sigh :LOL

I just read the epinions on this and I searched a bit. It seems that you can get a factory refurbished one with warranty and free shipping for less than $300. From eBay and also from some online stores. Maybe it would be better than buying a new vacuum every few years, huh?

I'll run it by dh and see what he thinks. I've just never spent this much on a vacuum and it's making me nervous,

I have a mid-grade hoover. I think I spent $150 and it works great. I have 2 dogs (when I bought it I had 3 dogs - my dog that died shed a TON) and it picks up the fur with no problem.

That's is what Eric and I did. Mine has a 3 yr warranty and let me tell you I have 3 Lab's and 2 kids. I vacuumed with my old one first, now when I have vacuumed the floor has always not smelled that clean. Then I vacuumed with the Dyson and First, YUK all the stuff that came out, and second, OMG the Floor smells SO Clean. IT is just Wierd, but good.

I talked with dh and we are going for it. A factory reconditioned, but warrantied one.

We had the Bissell for 2 or maybe even 3 years. I think for approx $50 that was pretty good! But before that we had a more expensive ($150?) Kenmore that really sucked. Or, uh, didn't suck, :LOL We got it brand new and after a year or two I was just tired of it. One day I used my mom's inexpensive Bissel and was blown away by how well it worked. It was sad to find that this vacuum that was about $100 less than ours worked so much better!

But still, I don't want to get another one that will break in a few years. I cant' seem to find any negative opinions of Dyson. And hey, it has a 30 day money back guarantee on the reconditioned so . . . . .

Gulp!
Did you look on ebay? There's a factory reconditioned one, with the 6 month manufacturer's warranty, plus an additional 6 month warranty from the seller for $245, which is less than I've seen it elsewhere. The auction on that one is ending tomorrow. I want it but I'm broke!
