I need to get my DD 2-3 pair of shorts, 2-3 pairs of capris, 1-2 pairs of jeans and 3-4 shirts, and DS1 4-5 pairs of shorts, 4-5 pairs of pants, and 5-6 shirts (they both grew a ton recently and are almost out of all their clothes!)...we have a Value Village, Goodwill, and I'm sure places like St Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army, etc....I don't mind shopping at Shopko, Target, etc, but if the second hand ones are going to have good/good enough clothes, I might as well try. Goodwill kinda sucks here, but I did find a couple good deals, but I know I won't find everything we need to get. So, what is Value Village like?

How about Ross, and umm...TJ Maxx I think is the name? What other stores should we check out?

I'd start at Value Village or whichever thrift stores work for you, then move to Ross, then Target, for the best price-quality ratio.

Value Village can be pretty pricey and their return policy sucks! If you have a return, you have to find something else in the store when you return it, they don't give store credit that you can leave with.
I have found good clothes there, and they usually have one tag color for half price or 99 cents. They are set up really well so that it is easy to shop there. Every major holiday brings with it a 50% off the entire store sale, and at ours, the line to check out is literally from the check out lines to the back of the store!
Ross and TJ MAxx have amazing clearance racks and all the labels are high end.

I love my Value Village - I usually travel over half an hour because it is so much bigger than the other thrift stores and therefore I feel like there is a better selection. Once we can't find anything there, we try Target or the other stores.

Ds wardrobe comes almost entirely from ValueVillage (called Savers here). I only buy items at 50% off or on 99cent days. I tend to pick up brand names I know/like (i.e. cherokee, peekababe, carters, oshkosh, gap, gymboree, children's place, etc). Most clothing is in great shape and frankly, I'll be able to re-sell most of it for what I paid without much trouble.

How hard are your kids on clothing? Ds is fairly easy on his clothing. If your Ds or Dd are wearing holes etc. fast then I'd buy from a store with a free replacement policy like Shopko.

Target brand (Circo) is IMO not good quality. I would only buy seasonal tees, white shirts, etc. in that brand. Nothing that I expect to last or pass on.

I like our Vallue Village but then i like any thrift store. Our Salvation Army and Good Will have set prices like all kids shirts 2$ or whatever. The VV on the other hand varies their prices so a designer lable like gymboree might be 5$ or more but there will also be shirts for 99c. They also will often do punch cards where once you spend x amount you get x% off your next purches.

I find I do the best if I go often. I keep a list in my purse of what the kids are going to need in the next size up (and the size after that too) When I see a great deal on something we will need down the road I grab it. That way I'm set when they grow out of their wardrobe but I don't go overboard.

SAVERS! You called it VAlue Village I think. It's absolutely amazing. I have found Gymbo, Hanna, Old Navy, Gap, Children's Place, American Eagle, Abercrombie, etc. My kids clothing and my clothing ALL come from Savers, every piece. I've walked out of there with 2 giant bags of clothing stuffed to the gills for only $30 before on 50% off days. Try them. Totally worth it!
What I like about VV is that they don't seem to take out the good stuff. It is very hard to find TCP, Gymbo, Gap etc at Goodwill, where as at VV I find them all the time. I also like that they keep the items in size order and by color within the sizes. You can totally pass up anything yellow, orange or pink if you choose.

I LOVE the color tag sales. I got a 14.99 cast iron pan for .99. I got my husband nearly new Levis for 5.99. and so on and on. Tuesday is .99 cent day here in Portland. GO EARLY!

I didn't realize there were more of them than the one here. Our Value Village has much better stuff than the Goodwill and Salvation Army stores here.
