I am 13 weeks pregnant and my doctor wants me to decide if I want to try for a vbac or schedule a cesearan. Her advice was the c-section but she said she would support my decision. My first son was born c-section. I was 41 1/2 weeks and they induced labor. I went in at 8:00 a.m. and they broke my water at 10:30 a.m.. At 11;30 p.m. I still hadn't dilated past 6. They recommended the c-section and my son was delivered at 12;50 a.m. the next morning. His heart rate had dipped a couple of times through labor and was born distressed. He is a healthy boy. She feels I will fail to progress again and because of the circumstances of his birth I should probably not try a vbac just to end up with another c-section. I don't know what to do? I want to do the best for my child. My first son was born a year ago. Has anyone been in this situation and what did you do and how did it turn out?

I really encourage you to research a VBAC. Your doc is not psychic and does not know if the same thing will happen again, how does she know enough to tell you that she feels you will fail to progress? You FTP probably because the baby was not ready to be born and your body was not ready to deliver. You were 41 1/2 weeks by their calculations, you could have ovulated late and only been 40 weeks, who knows. A mothers body knows. It is a convenience thing for them. Check out the ICAN website, I will look up the site address and post it for you. Sign up for the mailing list, a WEALTH of info !!! I wish I would have had it before my second c/section.

"failure to progress"? Geez, it sounds like she had a "failure to wait" until your body was ready to go into labor.

I would venture to say (although it's impossible to know for sure) that the reason for your cesarean was the induction.

If she's not 100% supportive of you having a VBAC, I'd look for another provider. Chances are, if you went over your due date again, she'd insist you have another cesarean.

This is really sad.

By the way, the fact that you made it past 5cm bodes really well for you with a VBAC.

You will not have a VBAC with that doc.

"She feels I will fail to progress again and because of the circumstances of his birth I should probably not try a vbac just to end up with another c-section. "

Uhh, how can she know that? It was probably the induction, or the baby's position, or your labor position, or the fact that they were all tapping their toes in impatience waiting for you to perform....

If you want a VBAC, find a physician or a midwife who says "Oh, yes, you sound like a great VBAC candidate!"

We have VBACs quite frequently in our facility; even more now that the area hospitals are not allowing VBACs. We have a near 100% VBAC rate over the last many years. 100% in the last two years. And it is because we know moms can do it. Look for a doc who has a VBAC rate of greater than 65%, and the higher the success rate the better.

Get a doula. Preferrably a doula who is experienced with helping moms who are wanting a VBAC.

Good luck!

And have a GREAT pregnancy, regardless of what path you choose!

So, basically, doc forced an induction before your babe and your body were ready to birth, then got impatient and cut. All too common. Matches my first section.

Do you happen to be in SE MI? There is a wonderful midwife in Temperence.

I would have to question any OB who tells me based on what you have shared that she thinks you should have another cesarean...that doesnt make sense, why on earth would you not progress? Just because the OB said you did not progress does not (by a long shot) mean that you would not have if given the chance and/or different circumstances like not being induced,

I suggest another opinion
and I suggest the opinion of a midwife who does VBACs -ask around,

happy baby blossoms!

I'm nto telling you one way or the other but I was in a similar situation but I was induced 2 weeks early and didn't get past 3. My mw said I was NOT a "failure to progress" I was a "FAILED INDUCTION".

When I looked at it this way I realized it was their problem NOT mine! Just ask anyone, every pg and every labor is totally different from the first, second, third, etc.

Another "failed induction" here. Do your research, join ICAN, read a TON. My OB recommended a VBAC this time, but the restrictions of the hospital require continuous EFM and mandatory epidural. Not acceptable for me so I hired a MW and am going for an HBAC this time.

Good luck with your decision. Your body CAN birth vaginally

Sounds just like my first C section. I was induced, got to 5 centimeters...
Well, I just had a VBAC!!!! SO WORTH TRYING!! So much easier to recover! Totally different for me this time around. I went into labor on my own 2 days before my due date! Had a fairly quick labor also!! My Ob thought that since I did get to 5 centimeters that I had a good chance at a Vbac. She also told me that I could change my mind at any time. I was nervous about having a long labor like before and an emergency C again but I am so glad that I had the courage to try. It really was worth it. I was out of bed that night!
Good luck to you!
