Anyone know any doctors who do VBAC in the area?

And is it true that local midwives legally can't do a VBAC at the birth center, but they can assist at a homebirth?

It's ridiculous that I am considered "high risk" if I tell them I want to VBAC but not high-risk if I become a patient seeking a repeat c/s. Totally shitty and totally whack. I am not pregnant yet but really need to find a new doctor to do my annual exam -- and I am hoping this person could also be my midwife/OB when it comes time for that, too.

Anyway, thanks in advance for your guidance/answers!

It IS rediculous!

Dr. Cohen's practice is the only one in Sarasota/Bradenton area who do VBACs. Unfortunately they say they aren't currently taking new patients (the 3rd dr. left recently, and with only 2 of them there, they don't have the freedom to be at the hospital the whole time a VBAC momma labors). It is possible that you could talk them into taking you, or that they will maybe get another doctor at some point and change their policy - we can only hope!

All of the midwives in town do VBACS, but the only birthing home who does them there (they are participating in a birth "study" to be able to do this) is Rosemary Birthing Home. To VBAC with a midwife though, you need to have a sign-off by an OB. There arent' many around who do this, but there is a great OB in Miami who travels up here a couple times a year to do group signoffs.

We have a local ICAN (International Cesarean Awareness Network) chapter here that meets monthly. You can also join us online:

The FL group is more active and full of info:

Hope that helps!

christina holmes (at birthways family birth center) just added a CNM to her practice as well- which means birthways will also be providing yearly exams, so you could also have them provide continuity of care for you.
