I'm an EBF'ing mama but curious about DHA. I know it's supposed to help with brain development in babes. I know formula fed babes need it added to their formula, but that it can't hurt for BF'ing mamas to take it since today's diets are probably low in Omega-3's. I've heard that fish oil capsules are a good source but I'd prefer some non-fish sources for DHA. My body doesn't react well to any seafood so I'd like to avoid the fish oil.<br><span style="font-size:medium;"><b>What are my options for vegetarian DHA and in what amounts?</b></span>

there are vegetarian and vegan supplements, but it is easy to get by eating foods with the appropriate nutrients.<br><br>
lots of dark leafy greens, walnuts and walnut oil, flax seed meal and oil and if you can handle it, sea vegetables are all good sources.<br><br>
it can also help to eliminate or reduce the sources of omega 6 & 9 that can cause a disproportion in the body (namely things like canola, soybean, corn, etc oils).

A DHA supplement is a good idea for people who do not eat seafood/fish even if you are eating foods with large amounts of Omega 3's. The Omega 3's in foods like flax, walnuts, and veggies are ALA, which our bodies then need to convert to EPA and DHA. Some people can convert ALA into DHA but some cannot.<br><br>
My body doesn't like flax so I include hemp seed and oil in my diet, which has the perfect ration of Omega 3s to Omega 6s, and then generally only use coconut oil for everything else to avoid too much Omega 6 and 9.
