Well, one of Andrew's mitochondrial treatments has a side effect of his not being able to fall asleep. We're using melatonin and it works for him at very low doses but I can't use it every single night with no breaks.

So I know I've seen Velarian mentioned on this board. Any specific brands or forms? Any drawbacks, experiences, whatever to share? I guess I better research whether it is safe with mitochondrial but I need something outside of melatonin.

a few people have said it can take a few weeks for the herb to start working but others (fewer) seem to notice the effects right away.

the side effects are usually stomach ache, nightmares and anxiety, but usually only when taken in large amounts.

this link may help: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/d...-valerian.html

ask your dr first though before trying it, just to be safe

we have used valerian super calm. it is a sweetish liquid from herbs for kids. i don't know how it would work on older kids but we've had great luck with it for a young toddler.

I've used it briefly in the past and I recall it had a *very* strong taste so I would definately make sure to get a formulation meant for kids.

and it didn't work for my particular 4 3/4yo ds. The bottle says "A calming formula that promotes normal activity. Nighttime use may promote normal sleep." I have my ds 1 dropperful or to the 1ml mark. The chart on the bottle says for ages 3-6 years/24-48lbs/1-2ml, 3-4 times per day.

I only gave my son 1ml at night so perhaps that is why it hasn't worked for my ds.

I have also given my son 0.25mg Melatonin. It worked twice to help him fall asleep but he was up in 2-4 hours. He has severe separation anxiety. We're working on him sleeping in his new firetruck bed that is next to our bed in my bedroom that we got at a resale shop for $50! So far it's working although my son still gets in my bed at least once in the night.
