I know this has been said here before, but I'm so upset by all those stupid birthing shows. Birth Day Live is on and WHY WHY WHY is every single woman LYING DOWN? Not one woman on that show has elected to at least try giving birth naturally. Every other birth is a C-sec.

I understand that we need medical interventions sometimes. When things go wrong, thank goodness for the technology. But no body ever gives themselves a chance to birth a baby the way mother nature intended. THese shows are just propagating the myth that childbirth is an inherently dangerous and unnatural act.

Ughhh...

I don't even watch those shows anymore. Even the commercials disgust me...a recent commercial I saw said something like, "See So-and-so's BRUTAL labor!" They actually used the word brutal...yes, it's hard work (I homebirthed about 7 weeks ago), but come on! Hearing it put like that probably scared lots of women out of natural birth.

I DVR Birth Day from time to time when it is a subject that pertains to me like big babies, overdue babies or VBAC. I have the hope that I will see something inspiring...hardly EVER happens. Like the pp I am also disgusted by most of the commercials as well. I end up bitching at the TV and I usualy erase the show midway through because I just can't stand it. There was one recently that was very good. A woman gave birth using the birthing bar. All natural and her doc was a family doctor and VERY cool. I sometimes hate the descriptions our satelite guide has for the episodes. "A woman attempts natural labor" etc. Hate that.

I try to keep in mind that that stupid Discovery Health channel is so sensational in it's prgraming. "Worlds Largest Tumor", "Fattest Man Alive", "Emergency Room Blood and Guts Galore"...exageration of course but just go through the shows and look at the titles. I hate that channel.

Oh and as for Birth Day Live...
Who the $^&# wants a camera crew filming you live (or at all for that matter) during labor. I don't even want my own mother in there for pete's sake.

Man I was wanting to say that!!!

There was at least one Mom who had a completely natural birth - - she even said that she was MUCH more afraid of an epidural needle coming close to her spine than anything natural childbirth would bring!

You mean Butcher Day Live? I think half the women wound up with c-sections for ftp.

The 2 bright spots were the women who vaginally delivered a breech baby and the one who went completely natural.

yet another reason why i don't have cable or satellite or even bunny ears. We just have DVD's and i have complete control....although i do miss being able to get public tv and their mix of educational programs for kids and adults....

Back when i did have cable, i get so pi$$y at the baby shows for showing all the c-sections and bottle feeding that i'd yell at the TV before switching the channel.

Sounds a lot like our local hospital which has a c-section rate of nearly 50%

i saw this weekend on one of these shows where the dr pulled on the cord to get the placenta out. you can guess what happened. : i told my husband if any dr tries to pull on my placenta to punch him in the face.

I saw that one. I was yelling at the TV. The doc said she gave the cord a "little tug" to get the placenta out and it just popped right off because the placenta was in such bad shape from the pre-E. Yeah, RIGHT. She then had to go in and remove the placenta piece by piece.

I don't get it - why the huge rush to get the placenta out? And for that matter, why the huge rush to cut the cord? I lurk on the AllNurses forums and they say that it prevents jaundice and other problems to cut the cord early (this was in a discussion of Lotus Birth with all the usual "Ewww, gross!" comments). I think that's ridiculous. Animals wait until the cord stops pulsating to chew it off - why should humans be any different?

ugh, tell me about it! We don't have Birth Day Live here, but we do have TLC's a Baby story....How frustrating!! Gee..I'm laying here on my back with a needle in my spine watching T.V. Why am I not dialating, oh well, let's just cut me open!? What really gets me is the mom's who try to breast feed, but give their babies formula from a bottle in the mean time and wonder why the kid's not taking the boob!?

When will women start questioning the effects of the medicalization of birth??

I flipped it on earlier today- the title of the program was abnormal birth positions. OMG. I did not watch- I am sure they think anything OTHER than the silly on your back in bed strapped down to machines is ABNORMAL! Boy do they have it backwards!
