Just a vent here.
Every stinkin' time i go shopping (which i do a lot) i go to nurse dd somewhere and there is absolutely nowhere to sit!!!!! She is 15 months now and her attention span when it comes to "nummies" is zero if there are interesting people and things around to look at, so i try to go somewhere semi-private most of the time. But even near the restrooms there are no chairs!!! I think it is just like the BON or Nordstroms that have a sofa or a separate, quietish area that we can nurse in! It frustrates me. A few times, i have just sat down on the floor and nursed her!!!! I mean, how hard would it be to just stick a couple chairs SOMEWHERE?!
Where do you all go when out and about to NIP?

at that age, i would sit on the floor, with my back to a wall, and possibly even in a corner. she was very distractable as well, so i tried to minimize that.
i don't go to malls or anything like that, i mostly shop in Borders, so i would just cloister us in the kids' section near the board books so she could hold something while nursing.
i have used the shoe department in sears though, when we tried to get photos done. lots of chairs there!

I have sat on the edge of displays - like the ones with jeans or t-shirts folded on them. But I have also nursed standing up, and even walking around, quite a bit. It can seem a bit brazen, but I really have never thought twice about someone caring about NIP. For the distractability, I would sit on the display facing the direction opposite the aisle. And yep, I've sat on the floor myself. The fitting room too if it was convenient. But never the bathroom - yuck!

ITA, try the shoe dept., they HAVE to have seats.

Try a lawn and garden dept., with all those pretty benches!

Try a photographer or some other place where people sit and wait.

Grab any old garment and go the fitting room.

I can nurse in the sling to avoid distractions sometimes. After age 1.5-2 years or so, I start to refuse to BFIP unless there is a "comfortable" place to sit (usually, that just means a chair). I absolutely HATE places that don't have a chair ANYWHERE. If I were really stuck (fussy, ready for a nap baby who was too distractible to BFIP), I'd find an employee and ask if they can recommend a comfortable place to nurse. Some managers would let you sit in an empty office.

The Westfield shopping mall near me has a great family room with curtained off areas with chairs. It's not quite NIP, but it keeps distractable DS to the task at hand.

happymommy,

I know exactly what you mean! Or none of the chairs have backs/arms! Sometimes I wish there were a law that all businesses have to provide chairs with backs and arms. When I can't find a chair with a back and arms, I have to sit on the floor with my back against the wall (and use my legs as the "arms"). I was in a mall once around Easter time and the only chair I could find anywhere that had a back and arms was the chair that the Easter Bunny had been sitting in! So I breastfed there!
