Q: "Are you still nursing that baby?"

A: "Wow, it's really pretty chilly outside!"

Q: "Is he still sleeping in your bed?"

A: "Please pass the stuffing."

It's all about skirting the issue, or more appropriately, ignoring the rude questioning.

I am in such a similar place, except I have a daughter and she's a few months older and eating some solids.... of course, not the ones MIL wants to give her. She can't understand how the fact that we're vegetarian means we don't want to give our child chicken bones to chew on. We had another family event recently, and I basically couldn't let DD out of my sight. Everyone thinks I'm the crazy one because I don't want to give my 8 month old ice cream cake. So Thanksgiving is going to be more of the same. Luckily MIL is hosting and will mostly be too busy to harass me.

I like Aimee's suggestions for ignoring the questions. :)

You could also do the Ann Landers "Why do you ask?"

Other answers that skirt the edge of rude include "Because we like to" "Because it's good for him" and "Because he's our baby and we make the decisions."

Hopefully he'll be hitting some milestone around then (sitting up, getting teeth, just getting in more hair) - just change the subject to that A LOT, like your obsessed with talking about it. That's way more appropriate to talk about and I think other people never remember what those are - that's why the deluge of other annoying questions (to which you have my sympathies - been there too.)

My family's not all that bad, but we've had our moments and issues. It's really crucial to set firm limits, as difficult and unpleasant as that can be (but need not be necessarily). I have pretty much said 'I will not discuss this with you', for example when my SIL told me I shouldn't go to my son so quickly when he cries.

Thanks for the suggestions and support!

I think the thing that is so frustrating is that I get these comments literally every time we see them - just as I did over and over with DD seven years ago. Well, except the circ one! :) You would think that they'd get tired of asking them. And you'd think that they'd look at DD who is brilliant and lovely and healthy and well-adjusted and think "Hm. Maybe it all turned out ok after all."

Although I'm keeping the "why would you ask," at the tip of my tongue too. And the "pass the potatoes," one too!

In-laws: "Blah blah bah and he turned out ok, so why...."

DH: "Hey, how many blades do you think there are on that ceiling fan, five or six?"

This stopped all conversation for a good long while as everyone watched the fan go round and round. The previous topic of conversation was totally forgotten.
