Well, I am not quite yet single, as my STBX won't be moving out until the 30th, but he already considers himself nothing more than a tenant and has washed his hands of anything related to his responsibility toward the house I will stay in. Friday night, I had a pipe start leaking in my bathroom wall. I had to run to the neighbor's house for help because I had no idea how to turn off the water to the house. Saturday morning, I managed to get a plumber out and he only charged me $117 to patch the pipe but recommended that I replace the old pipe with a new section. I called the insurance company to find out how the water damage repair is handled and they opened a claim number for me. So Saturday night, I went up to STBX and asked him if he'd help me with the repairs and his reponse was, "well, I'm just a tenant here, right?!" OMG, I was so speechless and angry that I just turned on my heel and walked away muttering that 'ya, just a tenant.' I am going to do my darndest to stay in that house. I work full time and that's how I'm going to be able to pull it off. I know I can do it as long as there aren't too many of these kind of expensive surprises. What an asshat!!!!

This morning, the second plumbing guy came out to give me an estimate and said that he recommended only replacing the section that we know is bad, since there's no way to tell what else might be going on with the pipes anywhere else in the house. I like that - it means cheaper!

Then, the insurance adjuster came out. He started freaking me out saying that he wants a mold/water damage remediation company to come and do a moisture test to determine how high the water level is in my walls. If the water level is at 18%, then it's ok and we don't have to do the whole remediation rigamarole, but if the moisture is at 19% or higher that we'd have to do the remediation or else he won't ever again cover any sort of water damage to the house!!!! Crap!
: I am so overwhelmed by all of this. I have several holes in my sheetrock in the bathroom and I am scared about having more holes put in because I don't want my beautiful home (modest but it's mine!) torn apart! Now keep in mind that in Texas, they can put the sensor to the ceiling and they'll get a moisture reading. It's humid here! There's moisture everywhere and mold can be an issue but I just don't see it happening...

I'm freaking out... This is so overwhelming... I know I've survived worse before like having DS kidnapped by his father TWICE, but this plumbing problem on top of the impending divorce is really wreaking havoc on me, and not just financially...

Anyway, I just wanted to vent... If any of you have any tips or advice, I'd appreciate hearing it. Or if you have your own survival stories, I sure could use a shot of courage right about now...

Thanks Mamas! (and Papas!)

The Angels are watching out for me! I am convinced of that! The water remediation guy came out this morning and poked tiny holes in several areas where I had water come leaking out and he said that there is no need for remediation!
The walls are definitely within reasonable limits for normal humidity levels!!!!
Yippeeeeeeeee.
: So now, I can dismiss the claim in the home insurance system, and make the minor repairs myself. I have learned so much recently that I am a very capable woman and I shouldn't doubt myself. It just feels great to have it confirmed!

Thank you everyone! I just need to remember my own motto that I need to take one day, one moment, one minute at a time. And, I can do anything! Well, maybe not car repair, but I could if I REALLY wanted to.

I just went to Home Depot and they have 3-1/4" plastic composite baseboards that almost match perfectly the oak color of my cabinets. I bought 1 long one for under $10 and can do 2 sections of the kickboards (the part that covers the bottom underneath the cabinet doors and goes to the floor) with a little section left over. I am starting to make a list of the essential power/hand tools that I'll need to own and then I'll be on my way!
