I woke up at 1:00 am and at 5:00 am with pretty painful contractions. These were different than the ones I had previously and I felt them in my back and lower down. Since 5:00 am I’ve had about one or two an hour. Also, there was some pink blood when I wiped, although it didn’t seem like mucus. Is this probably bloody show, and does it indicate that labor is starting?

I didn’t expect the early contractions to be so painful. I thought they’d start out a little more gentle. Maybe I had some yesterday though and didn’t realize.

I'm 39 weeks pregnant.

Thanks!

Well my contractions are very intermittent. Some relatively painless ones along with a few uncomfortable ones thrown in. But only 2 or 3 every hour. I guess it can go like this for a long time. I'm just trying to rest and stay hydrated.

If they're very intense, even so far apart, maybe once active labor kicks in it'll go fast. I had a looong prelabor period with my 1st, very long early labor, very easy contractions. Slow build. It was good for a first labor since I got to ease into it. With my 2nd, I had about 3 contractions over an hour, so about 20 minutes apart, but they were STRONG. After that hour they went to 7 minutes, to 4 to 3 to 2 in no time, total active labor less than 4 hours. Maybe that'll happen for you too Of course, it is impossible to predict.

It 's hard to say. This is my first. I "think" that the contractions were intense, especially the ones in the middle of the night, but I have nothing to compare them to. I do know that I can expect them to get a lot more intense as things progress!
