I was at the store today looking at all the canned/jarred tomato products that I can't buy (corn) and saw some Rice "cheese" to sprinkle on pasta. I turned it around to check the ingredients and the list covered pretty much the whole can. I didn't even bother to look at it. Anyway, ever since my first pregnancy our eating habits have gotten more and more healthy. This struggle with dd#2's food allergies have really brought that to a new level. I now will only buy things that are either produce or single food items or that just have a couple of ingredients. Once you get past 5 or so ingredients I guarantee you that the list contains something dd is allergic to. So, the really good thing is that we are eating all real food
: The bad thing is my food bill is huge

We don't go out to eat as much either (of course eating at home is almost as expensive). And my kids actually catch a lot less of the viruses and stuff that go around, I think because they are eating healthier.

Yeah, eating out for us is completely out of the question. But like you said, eating at home is probably just as expensive. And like you said we eat very healthy. When I was lamenting to the allergist about what I was feeding dd, feeling it was inadequate, she commented how dd eats much more healthy than most kids.

When DD2 was down to about 20 foods, I went to a pediatric GI and she said "I wish most of my patients would eat like this. It's very balanced." Silver lining, I suppose.

I've mentioned to DH a few times that there were definite positives to this whole food allergy thing. Not only am I eating far more whole foods than I ever did I'm also cooking more than ever and before dropping to the TED I was really experimenting with stuff and found some great easy healthy meal ideas. I've always avoided cooking just because it seemed like such a pain in the butt, but I'm used to it now.

That's true. It did force me to learn how to cook. That's a definite positive. And led me to all the wonderful people here.

I would love nothing more than to have never had had to come here, but it has been a pleasure getting to know all the wonderful, giving mamas here. I like coming somewhere where I can say what I want and know I will get support. I don't need to watch what I say like I do in many situations IRL. Yes, there are times I feel like I can't go on, I know I can say that here without having to hear "you need to just wean her" "why are you still bfing her anyway", the list goes on. Thank you everyone for being the bright spot in my often black hole of despair

I agree with all of the PP's--this allergy thing has really made me eat healthier, and make me aware of what exactly is in our food.

Even after having been successfully treated for my hardest-to-avoid allergens (corn, soy), I am having a hard time "going back". In all my reading and finding out that most corn and soy(among other things) are GM, I'm not sure I *want* to go back anymore!
