a friend asked me a question i couldn't answer, help me answer
:
why is it that our moms had to soak and scrub the poopy diapers and now we don't have too? is it really sanitary to put poopy diapers in the washing machine?

I'm sure our hot water heaters are more effective than our older generation of clothdiaperers. Also I'm sure our detergents are more effective at cleaning than they used to be. The hot water kills the e-coli. It would be interesting to do a culture of our clean diapers to see if they grow anything, though. If anyone has access to a lab please do this and let us know!

I crank of my water heater on high when I do diaper laundry and also do a very hot dryer cycle. I doubt anything could live through that.

But, I also rinse the poopy diapers completely before puting them in the bag with the rest of the diapers.
