Visiting Disney World.... what's a good beach to visit?

1030 Views 12 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  mamatoablessing
We'll be at Disney in a couple weeks. We want to visit a beach while there so can anyone tell me what's a really nice beach to visit? We're fine with driving a ways to get to it, if need be

Thanks!

I would recommend Clearwater...I like the West cost beaches better than the east coast beaches. If you want to go east I would say New Smyrna.
I love Melbourne Beach
There is also Cocoa Beach (but this beach tends to be a bit crowded).

I would take a two hour (1 1/2?) hour drive over to St. Pete Beach in St. Petersburgh or a beach on Treasure Island in the same area. Those are closer than Clearwater. I agree that Gulf beaches are much nicer (and the water is warmer - good for swimming and playing in right now) and the waves are much milder than east coast beaches. Whatever you do, don't go to Daytona. Yuck!
Definitely voting for west coast here! There's a state park in Clearwater called Fort DeSoto Park. It's on the beach and has places to picnic and all.
Fort Desoto is in St Pete, a good 45 min drive with traffic from Clearwater Beach. I would probably say Clearwater, they have a nice area to walk around and a nice playground for the kids as well as a huge variety of shops and restruants to choose from. Honeymoon Island is in Dunedin, just north of Clearwater, and its a park as well. Here in Pinellas county you have a lot of choices for beache from St Pete to Tarpon Springs

Here are some links for you to check out

Thanks everyone! Off to go look into all those...

Eh, a couple hours? We don't really mind driving if it'll get us to a nice beach. We're driving from Kentucky to Florida... what's another couple hours? Fortunately my ds loves the car so it's not usually an issue.

I would highly recommend the west coast, as the gulf is just so more beautiful than the atlantic, imo. It's a few hours from Disney. But if you end up heading east, I love New Smyrna Beach. We just got back from a week long vacation there and just fell in love with the area! Have a great trip!

If driving isn't an issue, I totally say go for Ft. DeSoto. You won't regret that you did it. I earned my undergrad just a small hop from there and it's amazing. Great playground for the kids, simply beautiful with a huge walking/biking path. A cool fort to explore. We try to take a drive down every month or so. It's a great place to recharge the soul.

If you really don't mind driving than I would consider going down to SWFL, Ft. Myers or South... you'll come across some amazing beaches down there. But it's going to take a good 2-3 hours to get down there, so if that's what you decide to do you might want to look into spending a night or two down there. Sanibel and Captiva island can be pretty neat too (right by Ft. Myers).

Gotta disagree with this. If you go to the major parks or beach entrances then Cocoa Beach is crowded. For us locals that go to the little parks with a small beach access off the beaten path the beach isn't that crowded. I do tend to go to the beaches in Cape Canaveral as I have more friends in that area, but it all merges together there and gets hard to tell when you've gone from one to the other. We have frequent beach parties down the road from where a friend from our UU church lives in Cape Canaveral.

btw I much prefer the beaches on the east coast to the west as the gulf coast is so shallow. Depending on the time of year it can be nicer, but in the summer going in the gulf feels like your going in a bath ick!

LOL. That's what I love about the gulf. I love how warm and calm it is.
