what to do, what to do??

DH works for a company based in Minneapolis and he has to go out for 10 or so days. I think the kids and I are going to go with him. We homeschool so we have that flexibility. I am just worried about what there is to do this time of year with the kids (ages 11, 10, 9, 6 and the 17 month old twins). DH would be gone all day and while we would have a vehicle, I am not sure where we could go. So what would you recommend doing this time of year with this many kids? I am looking for both "fun" and educational ideas. TIA!

Do you know when you are here? Any idea what part of town you will be staying in?

There are many things for families- one day at the Mall of America for sure, one day downtown Minneapolis- the Art Institute, the cool new library, one day downtown Saint Paul-Science Museum, Children's museum. There are a number of indoor playgrounds that are a good for all ages and a number of fantastic waterparks.

10 days is a long time away from home but lots of us find things to do all day even when it does get so blasted cold. I'm sure you will get lots of other suggestions on this list.

Good luck!

The Walker (modern art museum) is pretty cool. If you are here on the first Sat of the month, they have free admission and activities for families. First Thurs. eves are also free.

If your going to Minneapolis my extended family loves the Skyway. I am still not sure why. But just going downtown there is a Dayton’s no its Macy's (I think) and I love to go look and then walk through the Skyways.
But all the other PP are right. Minneapolis Art Institute is fun and free! My DS loves the HUGE paintings. Mall of America is always fun to see.
If you know what specific days you are here I am sure there is something going on!
We would be driving out over the weekend to be there for 12/10. I can't remember where DH said we were staying. At first he wanted to stay at the Raddison, but then he changed his mind (we want a kitchenette). He also said he thinks the Roller Coaster at the MoA is closed. Tell me it ain't so!!

I would go to the Holidazzle Parade. And Macy's animated holiday display. Both of which are free. The Macy's display is pretty awesome. I really recommend it. But its a Zoo.. so try to go on an off time maybe on Wednesday during the morning.
The St. Paul Science Museum is awesome and good for 1 day of fun. And they have an exhibit on Pompeii right now. My DS thinks Pompeii is VERY interesting.
I know more women will come up with other great ideas.

Oh. And I didn't hear that the roller coaster is closed! I checked their website and it didn’t say anything… http://www.parkatmoa.com/Hours.asp Hmmm. I am not sure on that one.

Oh- The Depot ice rink is beautiful. Also we stayed at the Marriot right there and they have an indoor waterpark with a train theme that is great, especially for little ones. The Courtyard Marriot has kitchens and free breakfast and is very family friendly.

I'm really surprised no one has mentioned the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley. It's nice both indoors and outdoors (if you get a nice bout of weather). There is a cool monorail to see the outdoor animials if it's too cold to be out for a walk.

The other nice thing is the Como Park Conservatory in St. Paul.

The Minnesota History Center is another fun place. Also I would think a day at http://www.edinboroughpark.com might be nice, although I have never been there.
I will say that traveling with children I'd recommend trying to do only one thing a day, maybe with one back-up if you finish the first thing early
My children also both love riding the light rail in Minneapolis, and it saves on having to park downtown.
Have fun!
