Hi mamas! I live in Canada and it is recommended that breastfed babies receive vit d supplementation. I haven't given baby any drops as yet and he is 1 month. I have been getting out in the sun and hoping he will get it in its natural form. We have been having some rainy days this week and he hasn't gotten much sun these past few days. Am I bad for not giving him the drops? The public health nurse told me "babies should never be in the sun". But it's not like I leave him for an hour. I give him 5 mins a side. I just really want to avoid giving him the drops because they aren't my breastmilk, and contain additives. But also I don't want him to become deficient in vitamin D. I was reading a La Leche League site and it said that not all babies need supplementation, and babies can get enough vit d just by being outdoors. Any opinions?

They are recommended more in Canada than the US because we get less sunlight & the rays are not as strong, but that is more for the winter. in the summer we get more sun than in the US. 5min a day would be fine. I wouldn't do it it it was more than 30above, but on the moderate days it's fine.
