I spread some homemade compost on a new bed I made adjacent to the back of the house and kept finding these odd little sprouts popping up. Evidently a few of our decorative pumpkins from last fall didn't completely decompose. I just got back from a month-long trip to find a mature, 20' vine with 2 softball sized pumkins (and a few more little ones) making it's way around the corner of the house and down the side of the driveway! I figured it was way too shady to plant pumkins, but I guess they decided to prove me wrong. I think they are just pie-sized fruit, so hopefully they will have time to mature. Do I need to do anything special with these little guys? Or do I just let them be and enjoy the pumkins in the fall?

I think those pumpkins will be just fine! They sound like survivors. I think pumpkins are heavy feeders though, so if you wanted to do something for them you could give them more compost, composted manure, or fertilizer. That must have been a fun surprise to come home to.

Just let them go, they should be fine. I had a couple of volunteer pumpkins grow out of my compost last year. Unfortunately, they didn't finish maturing in time. But it was fun to have them!
