Waaaa.....just pulled my dipes out of storage and my BBH elastic is shot!

734 Views 17 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  horsesjapan
I think I want to go to bed and cry. All but one of my BBH have shot elastic. I feel so STUPID for storing them in the garage, it must have been the heat (duh). Is there any way to save these diapers, other than the elastic they are in prime condition and I loved them SO much, or do I need to learn to let go?

Off to sulk and wallow in self pity.....

Aww Jeanette, I'm so sorry!!! I'll bet you could post in the WAHM forum and see if someone would be willing to fix the elastic for you, for a small price.
Can I cry on your shoulder? Where is the WAHM forum?

Jeanette

PS: Are you coming on Monday by chance, would love to see you!

WAHM forum is at the very bottom of the main forums.

I didn't know there was a final date on your diaper party . . Nitara has therapy on Monday afternoon. I'll PM you about times.

I am glad you are going to be a regular in Diapering soon!

its a real PITA to replace elastic.. takes longer to tear out the serging and elastic and redo it all than it does to sew a new diaper (especially if the snaps are anywhere close to serging), LOL. sorry about your diapers tho
that sucks!

Yup, a real PITA. I have done it a couple times, but I'm just crazy :LOL
Sorry about your diapers!!
Oh Jeanette, I'm so sorry! I can only imagine how sad I'd be.
How many diapers are you talking about? Even if it's a PITA maybe someone would still do it for the right price, if it's not too many diapers. Maybe you should contact the BBH mama?

Do all kinds of elastic do this? Is Lastin better than other kinds?

Ugh, one more thing to think about when I try to decide whether to keep our favorite diapers for a possible third babe, or just sell them and buy again next time.

Tara,
Well - if you decide to sell stuff - you know where to come first

So - was it the heat that did it, or can just storing diapers for a period of time make the elastic go bad? It must have something to do with the type of elastic used, because once I started thinking abou it the only one I had with an internal soaker (as opposed to quick dry) was fine, as were my ME's, and a few other misc dipes I had stored. Now I'm also worried about all the baby clothes I have stored in the garage, if I pull out that bin and all the elastic is gone I'll really sit down and cry - that would ruin the plan of #2 being cheaper!

Two questions:
What is the best way to store diapers. WE have so little storage space in our house, if we can't use the garage I don't know what we will do. Is breakdown in elastic a possiblity even when stored inside?

Also - anyone know how one might go about repairing the elastic. My mom says if I send her the dipes she'll give it a go - but it might be helpful to give her an idea where to start.

How long were the diapers stored? Elastic breaks down over time stored or not. And replacing it is a major PITB. How old are the diapers? I really doubt storing them in the garage caused the elastic to go. But I bet Candy( I'm pretty sure that's her)would be willign to replace the elastic.

One thing I did was sell my nb stash.I only kept the pf's, which I still use daily. I listed them for roughly 5.00 a diaper and ended up getting more for them then I paid. CD's have a pretty good resale value. Honestly, I can't see storing an entire stash for an extended period of time.
If your mom wants to give it a go, here is a link from Crafts that will help her.

The diapers were only stored for about a year or so. I contacted Candy to ask her, but she said that it wasn't really worth it to replace the elastic.

Kari mom,
Thanks for the link!

Jeanette
I imagine it has to do with storage temperatures, possibly combined with previous laundering?

Looks like you're in AZ. That's a dry heat, right?
I'd think that has to be hard on it since some people say excessive drying of diapers can break down the elastic.

But, I have diapers I bought a year ago that are still just fine (including BBH), but they haven't been used and have been just in our house in plastic containers.

What a bummer though. I love my BBH.

Holli,
Bummer is right
It has got to be more than just the temps - as the other dipes are fine. Oh well - I'll live....I'll just cry a few more times and I'll move on.

Perhaps a diaper funeral?

there are different types of elastic.. different brands, etc. There are different sizes as well (1/4, 3/8, etc.... would also affect how well they take to storage) none of them are perfect for diapers tho. Lastin will not wear out the way regular braided elastic will but it breaks super easy and can gather way too tight and leave marks. unfortunately its just a part of diapers
while its probably partly having to do with the elastic itself (how long it was stored before sold, sewn, etc) its mostly because of the dry heat.... straw that broke the camels back type of thing).

No suggestions on storing them properly tho.... too humid/moist and they could get ruined.. to hot/dry elastic rots. I guess thats why I just dont save mine :LOL

Damned if we do, damed if we don't?

This does seriously make me think about selling and rebuying after this baby if we decide to have another - I was just going to save everything again....but wouldn't that be more expensive in the long run?

I know, that's what I'm thinking now too after reading this. But it makes me sad! I don't want to sell our favorite dipes!
Maybe if I know they are going to a loving home...

When I stored my diapers, everything with lastin was fine and everything with polybraid was shot. Course it took me a while to figure out how to use Lastin and not have it break, but now that I know we don't have any problems with Lastin breaking. I can't remember if they were stored in the garage or the house, but I think they were inside in a cardboard box. I lived in Vegas at the time, so even if it wasn't hot inside, it was still on the dry side I suppose.

Hugs~~
