Not usually at night, but very often during daytime naps DD will wake herself up with a sudden shriek. She'll be completely out cold, limp limbs, everything and right in the dead of sleep will let out this painful-sounding cry, then she continues for almost an hour of fussing before going back down. She's done it while sleeping on the couch, on the bed, on my chest (incline, and without) before and after meals... I can't figure out what's going on. Is it something like nightmares? Anyone had experience with this?

One time she shrieked and whimpered and /stayed/ asleep. DH was worrying over her the whole time.

Perhaps she has a wet diaper. Some babies are more sensitive to this than others. Maybe she is too hot. Dress her as you would dress yourselves. And also it could be gas. If you are breastfeeding are you gassy or eatting gassy foods? Dark green veggies, dairy, actually the list goes on to things you could be eatting that could be affecting her. Besides that it is entirly a possibilty that she is teething. Teething can also cause a gassy baby.

Hope you get this figured out.

I weeded all those things out of my diet. She was teething starting at 3weeks, but they receeded and haven't come back down yet (we check regularly)
she never cries for a wet diaper, only for a soiled one. There isn't a correlation anyway... she's done it on a dry diaper (we cloth, btw). We've checked all these things before trying to find a simple explaination.

Maybe it's just gas, I don't know. She was a very gassy baby for her first few weeks, and she never shrieked like this, though.

I'm not sure if this could be it ... but my son occasionally does that loud crying thing too. In fact once, he woke up screaming so painfully, it sounded like he was being burned. In my son's case, it was painful reflux! Fortunately, this has not happened recently.

My baby has done the same thing and it was definitely due to teething for her. She just cut her first two teeth last weekend and it had been brutal - she's been uncomfortable and it has disrupted her sleep. It's funny though - she use to only wake up screaming from her naps with no disruptions at night but then for the two weeks preceding her teeth cutting thorough, she woke up and would cry during the day and night. Anyway, this may or may not be the case for your baby. Hope she's feeling better and sleeping undisturbed soon!

To see if it is gas try "pumping her legs". Lie her on her back and push her legs into her chest. Then pull out straight and repeat around ten times- twenty. You can also gently massage her belly during a bath to work out the gas. Hope you find the cause soon and harmony returns.

Poor baby. My dd did something similar...it was reflux. Some of the other things she would do: move her head from side to side in her sleep while smacking her lips. The doc said that was because she was "tasting" her milky that was coming back up her throat. When it got really bad, she would arch her back, stiffen her body, stretch her legs straight out, and scream. Agony. But she's 7 1/2 months old now and it's gone. Yeah! She was on Zantac until about a month ago. Hope for your baby's sake that it's not reflux...good luck figuring out what it is.
