My 5 month old has become more and more irregular in his sleep over the past couple months. He used to sleep a good 8 hours and take several naps a day. He gets gas so sometimes he would wake from his naps crying until I burped him and then he would be okay. Now he is waking from his naps crying even when he doesn't have to burp. I always nurse nap him to sleep then once he is good and asleep I sneak away. Usually after about 10 min, sometimes less, he will wake up crying hysterically. I run to him put the booby in his mouth and he settles back down and falls asleep. If this doesn't help then I know he has gas and I burp him. Now he is waking at night crying too. We co-sleep so I quickly get him on the boob and he goes back to sleep. Every couple hours during the night he will start tossing his head side to side. Sometimes the booby helps him settle sometime it doesn't. I'm not sure if he is in pain or if he is doing this b/c he wants me. Anyone have a similar experience? Do you think that this could be a medical issue? Thanks for your help.

My thoughts are he is just crying out for you, or, he could be teething, which causes lots of pain and he'll want to nurse A LOT!

I've had some similar behavior from my almost 5 mo old. Sometimes he nurses to sleep just fine, other times he wakes up crying hard after 5-10 minutes. He's still definitely tired, almost half-asleep when he's crying. In fact, the moment I pick him up he almost always falls back asleep about a second later. The other thing is that he's rolling and moving more while asleep and sometimes wakes himself up while sleep moving. Sometimes he can find a position to fall asleep with, sometimes I end up curling up with him to try to help him stop fidgiting and go back to sleep. No great advice here, just that I don't think it's too unusual.
