Yeah, pretty much what the title says. Any suggestions? Similar, more affordable carriers? I have a sling I've used for two kids and a large external frame backpack for hiking, but I'd like to have the option of wearing him on my back a lot easier. Ideas? Thanks!

You could make yourself a no-sew gauze wrap that would work well for back carries as long as you're careful wrapping -- see www.mamatoto.org for directions on that and other do-it-yourself carriers.

If you're at all crafty and have a sewing machine or have access to one, there are a lot of different carriers you could make for much cheaper than buying them retail. One good source of information/instructions is the do-it-yourself forum at www.thebabywearer.com. For example, you could make yourself a mei tai that would be very handy for back carries. I believe there are instructions somewhere for making soft structured carriers similar to the Ergo as well.

Hey

another option would be a Patapum...I have one and its *soooo* comfy! Its similar but a bit more streamline and a bit cheaper.

Just know that even though a Ergo might be expensive its worth it in the long run...if you can only afford 1 carrier...its best to buy a good quality one which will last and Ergo's are quite the workhorses and will last ages. Its like buying a jeans...in the long run its cheaper to buy a slightly more expensive yet better quality pair becos the construction, fabric and wear will be better...verses cheapo jeans which wear out faster.

check out the FSOT board on TheBabyWearer.com...gently used Ergos come up alla the time...usually for about $50.00
Do an ergo search...

I watched all the for sale or trade boards on diaper swappers, here on MDC, babywearers, Christian moms forums. etc...

I found on older ergo for $50 pp. I like it very much. We haven't used it much yet because the daycare kid I need it for is HUGE and she makes herself very difficult to carry. But, the few times I have done it, I like it very much. I don't own anything new at all.

One thing I love is a mei tai. Those can be easily made if you sew at all, or they are very reasonably priced at For sale or trade boards.

Thanks for the info! I like the look/price of the Patapum. Mei tai seems nice and although I have no sewing skills, I'm sure my mom could help me make one, but I'm not sure that DH would wear it--too much positioning and whatnot. He loves the ring sling we have, and I know he'd like the Ergo type carrier. I'll look around for used.
