I'm just now trying to figure out this train stuff, but I'm looking for a nice train table (preferably Thomas) with the board and the whole shabang for my son's birthday in December. Any suggestions on this stuff is welcome.

We found one around this time last year at Costco for about $125. That was a train table, two huge storage drawers underneath and a 100 piece train set. I don't think it's Thomas brand, but same stuff, you know. Compatable. Since then Dh has a had really good luck adding to the set with EBay purchases. If you or someone you know has Costco, start keeping an eye open, cuz it's Christmas there right now! : Also, if you have any military connections, try a Px. There are often dynamite prices there, particularly when it comes to big ticket items.

Good luck! My daughter loves hers.

We got a generic one at toys r us, it has storage bins under it too, great for blocks, train pieces etc. The thomas ones don't have the storage under them and are WAY overpricedjust to say "thomas" on them. Target has a train table now too, but I don't know the price.

Here are the ones at toys r us
Pottery Barn Kids has a nice one in their latest catalog that comes with two nice rolling bins that fit under. Pricey, but IMO worth it

OR...if you know someone handy with carpentry, you can make one for probably under 20 bucks and paint it yourself.

How about a coffee table?

I've thought about it myself for my son, I havne't bought one yet, but I was going to cruise garage sales and find a good size coffee table and paint it or finish it off to be a train table, with cool colored paints, you could paint the roads and trees and houses yourself..... and with any luck you could get a table really really cheap.

The only problem with a coffee table is finding one to accommodate a large train set. But otherwise that is a great cheaper alternative
