Hi.

My dh had a vasectomy 2 weeks before we found out about my in utero baby (I'm 32 weeks pg now...).

Since then he's had his follow up tests and two were clear and one was not (the first one was not, the following two weer clear). He was 24 at the time of surgery and from what we've read, it seems like the earlier you have it done, the higher the rate of failure.

Well, during my planned c/s I intended to get a tubal because I would prefer to make DOUBLY sure that I don't get pregnant again. I've had 5 m/c and 2 successful pregnancies. I'm just not interested in playing roulette with my fertility. We're done.

Sooo, here's the dilemma. I started researching tubals, and I read some SCARY stuff about increased menses, increased pain, increased cancer risks, 4x higher rate of hysterectomy....

Now I'm starting to question things.... but at the same time, I reallllllly don't want to get pregnant.

I know if I had a tubal, we could enjoy sex and not have fear.... but I'm afraid if I don't, we're always going to have that "what if" monster in the back of our heads....

From my personal experience from women who have HAD it done that I know (which, surprisingly is a lot)..........most women I know who've had the full hysterectomy get really bad periods, etc etc. The girls I know who just got tubal ligations didn't have as bad problems. I have two girlfriends who actually rave about it and recomend it to everone.

I know thats not anything scientific, but for whatever it's worth.........

What a tough choice.

I work with a girl who had a tubal done after her second son was born. It's only been about 7 months since she had the operation but so far she said things are fine and that she doesn't notice a difference in anything. She's very happy with her decision, btw.
It sounds like a tough decision. Good luck.

It's not unusual to have the first post-vasectomy sample tainted- it takes time to get everything out, especially if he wasn't, um, making a lot of use of it.
Why don't you get him tested one more time to ease your fears? They really have a very low failure rate.

Maybe I am mis-understanding. If you have a hysterectomy, you wouldn't have a period at all. My cousin had her tubes tied after he 3rd baby and she said it was a breeze. She hasn't experienced any changes in her cycles.

I had mine done in Nov. of last year, and so far all I've noticed is a heavier flow. No cramps or anything like that, and recovery was minimal. *But* there is such a thing as "Post-Tubal Syndrome", so please read up on this on the internet before you make up your mind. It doesn't happen to everyone, but it does happen.
For the record, I'm in my early 30's and it's said the earlier you have it done, the higher the failure rate, as your body tries to heal itself of the scar tissue.
Your doctor should go over the pros and cons with you before you come to your final decision.
Good luck!
