Well, I got my hair done! Nobody's noticed, even though I went a very much darker.

Do you know how to gently wash it to preserve the color as long as possible?

Today it's been long enough that it needed washing. I used Liggett's original soap. The rinse water came out brown, as though some of the dye is washing out. I'm prepared to touch it up as the directions instruct, but I'm hoping it isn't back to original color that fast! (a whole month.)

Apple cider vinegar seems to clean pretty well and preserve color. Squirt it in with a squirt bottle (you can dilute it with 1/2 water) and scrub it into your hair and scrub it out; rinse thoroughly, using your fingers to scrub out more ACV and getting all the water throughout your hair. The more ACV you use, the better it will clean.

So, you can just use ACV to wash your hair - nothing else required? Seriously? Will it get hair products out of your hair too? I don't use much - just some Aveda Phomollient stuff mixed with some of their Smoothing Serum for my curly hair.

I've GOT to try this!

There is a no-poo regimen for curly hair that uses baking soda and conditioners or just baking soda/water and ACV. ACV does get products out to a degree. To do a full clarifying rinse, use baking soda and your regular shampoo or start going no-poo. This removes build up.

Honestly, most of us don't have to use lotions, potions, gels, serums and stuff anymore doing this regimen and there's no wicked poofy frizzy curls.

Colored hair is tricky - the only thing really to do there is to try to find a gentle color-care shampoo, preferably natural, or use less of the shampoo you have. Most natural stuff strips hair color. ACV will protect your hair to a degree, but not everybody can get their hair clean with ACV (it takes a long time for your hair to get used to it).

I'm a little confused about the no-poo regimen. When you talk about not shampooing every day and such. I love my curls, but I have fine curly hair and after sleeping on it all night, SOMETHING has to be done with it.

So, this may be an incredibly stupid question - but could I just do the no-poo thing a copule of times a week and the rest of the times just rinse my hair with water?

Yeah, now that I typed that out, it sounds really stupid, but hey, I have to figure it out, right?

No-poo means not using sodium lauryl sulfate shampoos. You can clean your hair everyday with a non-sulfate shampoo and it's still considered no-poo.

Check out the links on the curly girl thread link (first page - there's a big string of them) it will explain the reason, the method, and tips.

It's been washed twice, and most of the color has come out.

grr I just can't color my hair

but I can't stand mediumish brown hair. It never has seemed like it was me.

It's hard to be unable to use the mild and natural soaps or BS routine
and buy something hi tech to keep the color from washing out - and still not
be able to make it last even with!

I guess I've got to go to a salon, which sounds like overkill, or go back to conventional products, like Clairol with ammonia. (I don't quite remember which product worked but I think it was Eugene and Walgreens had it.) Which do I pick, go to a salon every 3 months or buy a box every 3 weeks?

Where did you have your hair dyed? At a salon or you did it? I ask b/c I recently did my own w/a permanent hair color from HerbaTint. I was doing the no-poo regimen and I swear it not only lightened my hair but made it grayer! Okay, I don't know if it made it more gray. But it definitely didn't stay permanent. And it seems lighter than my natural color.

I did the no poo thing for just shy of 3 weeks. I broke down and used my Giovanni 2 nights ago. Last night I used plain water. Now I want to get my hair colored at the salon and go that route. But I'm afraid of paying big money and having it wash out too.

Sorry to hijack, just subbing to the thread I guess!!!

First, I have to say I have not yet tried the no-poo regime, but plan to.
Having said that, I can try to volunteer myself for the project of experimenting, because I have naturally curly hair that is also salon-colored dark. I use salon poos and conditioners, as well as smoothing serums to keep me from "fro-ing" out like Bozo. It's been yeeeears since I used ACV in my hair, but I'll give it another go. I do enjoy my salon hair products, and probably won't give them up for a bit, since I get them at cost, but I am defffffinitely intrigued by the no-poo. I read about sulfates years ago, and stopped looking for answers and gave up after trying many suggestions back then. However, I'm now in a different climate, have gone through a seven year change, hormonal changes throughout, and am open to trying just about anything to have the experience to share. So, I'll try tonight, and get back to post tomorrow. If my color gives me a hard time, I have the luxury of getting it re-done (trade services, as I do nails for hair!), so I won't be out anything!

If apple cider vinegar doesn't work for you, you can do conditioner only washing too (lightweight, silicone free conditioner only) or conditioner plus baking soda no-pooing.

It takes a while for your hair to get used to not using shampoo and to find a combination of ingredients and a routine that actually work for YOUR hair, so I would go no-poo the regular way with baking soda and apple cider vinegar before delving in to conditioner only washing (or condish+BS).

Just talkin' from experience...
