I have noticed an ammonia smell in my washing machine, is there something I can do to get rid of the smell? I do a cold soak overnight followed by a hot was with dawn for my diapers. They have not had any smell issue-

Thanks!

you can strip your machine.
if you dont have access to Charlies (strips everything off of / out of everything!!!)
then do the following:
turn up your hot water heater as high as it goes.
wait at least half an hour for the water in there to heat up.
start a hot cycle in your machine. add at LEAST 2 cups (i have added up to a whole gallon) of white distilled vinegar. and 1/2 that ammount of baking soda(or washing soda, but baking soda is most reccomended), throw in one or two rags.
halfway through,take the rags and wipe down all the internal surfaces you can get to, the inside of the lid, the parts of the aggistator and drum that the water doesnt get to, be careful the rags are HOT! use gloves.
let cycle finish running.
run COLD cycle to flush out all the loose gunk.

viola, a clean fresh smelling washing machine.

i jsut did this to my moms last week.
smells fabulous now.

This happens to us sometimes when the weather gets warmer--kind of a musty smell. If all else fails, I do a super hot wash with a little bleach and then run several rinse cycles before doing any clothes in it. Clears it right up!
