We just started solids a few days ago, before DS was EBF. He still only gets one small meal of solids a day about 1-2 tbs. I was wondering is it necessary to supplement with water with such a small amount of solids for an otherwise breast fed baby? If not, when does it become necessary? Any opinions? I have "Super Baby Foods" but find myself not agreeing with a good bit of the philosophy.

I gave DD water with solids as soon as she started on solids. My reasoning was that she'd been on an entirely liquid diet up to then and it would be less of a stress on her system if the extra solidity was balanced by some liquid. I found a sippy cup that worked for her and just let her have as much as she wanted - which wasn't very much. DD has never had problems with constipation from solids but a friend of mine's little guy did and the problems went away as soon as she started giving him extra water.

I offer finger food to my 9 month old 3xs a day (when I am sitting down to eat). I've started offering a little bit of water when I give her solids just because I personally like to drink water when I eat and whipping out my boob midmeal is just not practical.

Having said that, I'm careful to nurse before meals so that he is not filling up on the water.

I just started with solids about a month ago (at 6 months). I would/will offer water in a sippy after DD's eaten a few bites (or if we're using the mesh self-feeder, when she's done). She's enthralled with the sippy, and will ignore all food if she sees it (she kind of uses it as a teether a little bit too, lol). I mostly used the water as a "side" item, to get her used to drinking out of "not-a-boob", since that's all she's ever had.

Also, when I introduced the sippy with water, it was super hot here (in the middle of that heatwave) and I wanted to make sure she didn't get dehydrated.

we give ds water every time hes in his high chair, sometimes thats all he has, somtimes i give him a teething buscuit. We only started solids yesterday (sweet potatoes) but he had water with him. The gerber little dippers are really good if they are at the pureed food stage, they can dip them in the food and feed themselves. Ds loved it!
