I'm presently interfacing with medical professionals somewhat regularly (my DS has swelling in his testicle/scrotum that is puzzling us and our doctor). I keep being asked about immunizations (standard question at hospital check-in, new doctors etc.) and I keep saying...

"We have a religious exemption."

But I don't actually have any sort of paper in hand saying we are exempt. My kids are 3.5 and 1.5...both are in part-time home daycare and when I enrolled them I noted my standard "we have a religious exemption" and that was the end of it.

So...I'm wondering....what are the pros and cons of being in touch with whatever state department grants these exemptions and getting some actual paperwork.

Thanks!

I don't know what state you are in but here in FL it's best to just go get the paper, so that you have it on hand should you choose to use it.

Here it's pretty easy. Walk in, ask for it, and get it.

Where I live (VA) the "religious exemption" is a paper filed with the public school system, period. You print the paper, sign it, get it notarized and give it to them. End of story.
It's a declaration the parents make. You don't carry it with you. It doesn't go to the health department, unless the school is sending it to them.
You can say, "We don't vax for religious reasons."

The state law concerning vaccinations and children only applies to school. The exemption "exempts" them from the school immunization requirements.

You can saw what the pp said or "we are religiously opposed to the practice of vaccination."

I wouldn't answer any questions about your religion/beliefs.

You shouldn't need a form for doctors offices, just school (as said above).

I just write 'religiously opposed' on my intake papers for each doctor. You know? The boat-load of forms you have to fill out every time you see someone new?

"You" could get a stamp made up at Office Max/Staples that says something like "relgiously opposed to vaccination" to use on all those forms.

That could be fun. We could do a MDC set, opposed to circ, vax, artificial nipples, etc. We could keep them in our purses and stamp everything applicable in every medical setting

I don't think anyone official has to grant it; you just have to print out the form, check that box, and sign it. At least in my state to the best of my understanding.

I would just go online to the website for your school district, and print it off there. Or a state website. Or pick one up from your local health department. It is usually on the back of the form used to list the dates of immunizations - or the second page if printing online.
