My DS (almost 3 ½) has only been nursing before his nap and bedtime for quite some time now.

He used to have to nurse for 10 minutes or so and fall sleep at the boob. For the last couple of months he has been gradually giving up bedtime nursing. He will nurse for just a minute or 2, and then he will roll over and go to sleep on his own. Some nights he doesn’t nurse at all before bed, we just cuddle and he goes to sleep.

Now for the past few weeks he seems to be giving up his daily nap. He only naps about once or twice a week now. I guess he doesn’t need that hour nap anymore because he’s added an extra hour at night and he isn’t cranky or anything. So I guess that is coming to an end. And with the nap goes that nursing. He never even asks to nurse at other times anymore, he hasn’t for a while.

So, it looks as though weaning might be close. I have mixed feelings. I’m sad that my baby is growing up so fast but I have to admit that I’m also a little relived at the thought of our nursing relationship ending. Nursing has been really smooth sailing but I’m looking forward to moving to another level in parenting my son, as nursing has been such a HUGE part of parenting him, yk? I am also really pleased at how easy the transition has been. I was really worried about getting him to sleep without nursing, but it’s been without any issues. I guess it’s been so easy because it is completely on his terms.

Anyway, It is bittersweet for sure. :
