Thanks for the heads up, I'll be tivo'ing that!!

We doing great here. J.C. is 10 days old. He's nursing like a dream and sleeping really well. The girls are doing ok, just "loving" on him too hard We had our first solo outing yesterday, but does it count that we just went over to a girlfriends house probably not. but I did have to figure out how to get everyone in and out of the house together LOL!! Going from 2-3 has been much easier than going from 1-2!! Dh goes back to work on Mon. so this was our last week w/ home, and Im kinda nervous about next week, especially w/ me starting to feel the effects of a little ppd or pp anxiety...my mom said she'd come next week to help out but thats a whole different headache (see can we talk thread for info on that) Guess I'll just enjoy today and this weekend and see what next week has in store for us....

Elijah is 3wks old today. : He's my little peanut..I'm so in love. I don't know how much he weighs but I'm sure it's somewhere over 10lbs because he was 9lbs at birth and at 5 days old he had gained a half a pound! Is anyone else not seeing a pedi at all and not doing the well-child visits? I feel like the only one. We went to target last night. Elijah was sleeping when we got there but not long after he woke up hungry. So I just held him and rocked him until we left. (We were in and out pretty quickly thank Jah) Gosh I can't wait to get my sling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm hoping this mama replies to my inquiry on TTP about the one she's selling...: I felt bad to make him wait to eat..

Sorry for the vagueness. No one asked me to nurse in the bathroom, but I was having much difficulty getting him to latch on w/ a blanket over his head. And while I want to be discreet, the whole blanket thing makes me feel bad for ds and I don't like it. So I was only able to get him to eat in the bathroom, and then not much.
To be fair, it seems the problem is my inexperience... it's good to know it gets easier.

I've never nip, but I'd like to. I always hid in the car or a dressing room. I went to the mall with a friend once 6 years ago. She sat down to nurse and it seemed like everyone who passed by gave her the natiest looks. She wasn't showing any skin or anything, she was wearing overalls so even her tummy was covered. Then, a lady totally yelled at her and told her she was disgusting when she nursed in Walmart. It didn't bother her, she told people where to go, but I've been scared ever since. Seattle is pretty open, I think, and this was in Mesa, AZ. Maybe its a little different depending on where you live.

Just NIPd DD the first time today while waiting at the bank! Nary a side look at me at all...

...and even if they did, they'd have picked the wrong person to try to bully .

I think my DH being super supportive of NIP has made all the difference in me feeling super comfortable doing it.

I am discreet, but I make no excuses and will nurse my daughter (and nursed my son) whenever she needs it, wherever we are. I usually use a cheapo Gerber cloth diaper draped over my shoulder/boob just until I get babe latched, and then I take that off - all they might get is a look at some nice cleavage :

And yes, first time mamas, it DOES get easier. AND, I wholeheartedly endorse the suggestion I've seen here to practice in front of a mirror a few times until you get more comfy, so you see exactly what is "out" and what is not!

Maybe this is dumb... how do you get babe latched with a cloth over him/her when you can't see them? Getting ds latched for me takes both hands (one for his head, one for the breast) and a very watchful eye (and that doesn't guarantee a comfy latch). I want to learn to NIP, but I have so much trouble nursing as it is I don't even know where to start. I REALLY want to learn to nurse in the sling. I would feel so free!

You're not alone. I usually do the first appt just to have something on record, also b/c my mw really wanted me to as she doesn't feel comfortable listening for the heart murmur AND b/c I had a congenital hip displacement as a babe and had to be in a cast and brace until after 1yo - it's the type of thing they check for at the first appt.

Other than that, I take my kids when they are sick b/c we don't do vax and that's really one of the main reasons they set the schedule of so-called "well" visits that they do.

hmmm...I'm not sure "how" I do it, but I've never really had a problem and it usually does take me two hands to latch (cradlehold babe with one hand, hold boob to latch with other). I've never done it with a blanket over me, but the little bit of my boob I need to take out to put in his mouth for latch is blocked by his head, yk? I never heard of the mirror trick, but that would probably work well to give you an idea of ahem...exposure. Nursing in a sling is the bomb I have to admit! It can also be done in a wrap or even a mei tai. So nice...

Hmmmm, how to describe....let me pretend I'm doing it right now...

As I said, it's just a really light cheapo cloth diaper folded in half so it's pretty small, draped over my shoulder and hanging down just enough to barely cover my boob and her head. I just kind of prop the diaper cloth up and out with the hand I'm using to hold my boob (kind of with the thumb and index finger), so I can peek under it and watch the latch, while the other hand has her head....the cloth is just big enough to cover up any "nipplage" that happens until she gets latched ...so, if she's nursing on the left side, I prop and hold boob with the left hand and hold her head with the right hand (and vice versa).

Does that make any sense? I like the cloth diapers for this purpose, I have a couple dozen cheap ones I use exclusively as "covers" and burp cloths. ALl the blankets I have, even the smaller lighter ones are too bulky for my taste. I just literally want a little screen to keep my modesty briefly and avoid nipple exposure (which would kind of embarrass me ), but once babe is latched on, I'm good. Then with unlatching, I make sure I grab my shirt with the hand I'm not unlatching with and pull my shirt up while I'm moving her head away...also another reason why I wear sports bra or tank top type undergarments and stratchy V-neck shirts, I can pull down and pull up easily in them.

Hope this helps!

I NIP with a blanket too, and I've never had a problem getting a latch, but I think it pays to practice it a few times at home so you learn how it "feels" so you don't have to see. I also always lift my shirt from the bottom. I hold him in a cradle hold in one arm and then hold the boob with the other hand and he finds the nipple. When he's latched on I can let my boob go and then I can eat with my other hand (which I did at Panera Bread Co. today!) My Mom is here this week, and she laughed because I have literally eaten every meal with one hand while nursing. Why do they always want to nurse just as you sit down to dinner?

b/c clearly...it's dinnertime! LOL

I either eat one-handed or dh feeds me. I swear he loves to do that, he's always offering whenever I nurse...LOL...
